Job Summary


The Manager, Production is responsible for the inspection and maintenance of tracks, roadbed and right away, in accordance with the sound engineering practices and approved railway standards, specifications, procedures and budgets and within the CN operating plan.

The incumbent manages work gangs of various sizes and additional gang tasks. The role is responsible for managing a large territory, manpower and budget. This position is considered a developmental role prior to moving to the Senior Manager Engineering position.

Main Responsibilities

People Management

  • Provide leadership to Program Supervisors and hourly Maintenance of Way (MOW) employees
  • Provide clear direction on employee performance and department goals and objectives
  • Provide coaching and counselling to subordinates who are not performing to established goals and standards
  • Respond to and resolve grievances
Safety

  • Build safety compliance and improve safety results
  • Carry regular efficiency testing and safety walkabouts
  • Provide positive and constructive feedback
Program Inspections and Standards

  • Execute capital program requirements
  • Inspect programs during and upon completion
  • Identify quality control conditions requiring action to meet Engineering Track Standards
Production Activities

  • Manage production activities such as work block planning and compliance with Transportation team
  • Ensure on time starts and full work block capacity are achieved
Working Conditions


The role will be primarily performed outdoors in various types of weather and environmental conditions and partially performed in an office environment.

The role requires being available on-call 24/7 to respond to critical incidences and requires frequent travel across the territory.

Requirements:

Experience

Railroad and Track

  • Minimum 10 years of railroad experience
  • Minimum 6 years of track experience
  • Minimum 5 years of supervisory experience
Education/Certification/Designation

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering
  • Any designation for these above would be considered as an asset

  • Follows safety procedures, information security instructions and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles to lead by example
  • Improves processes on a continuous basis to enhance safety, security and to reduce CN's environmental footprint
  • Shares timely information within and across functions to get things done effectively
  • Leverages feedback and coaching to improve performance
  • Tracks metrics to achieve ambitious targets and holds self and others accountable to meet performance expectations
  • Is agile in responding to the rapid evolution of the industry and of technology
Technical Skills/Knowledge

  • Knowledge of track structure, construction and maintenance
  • Canadian Rail Operating Rules
  • Strong knowledge of Engineering track standards and operating measures
  • Basic understanding of applicable collective agreements
  • General Microsoft Computer Skills (Excel and Word)
  • Knowledge of Track Inspection System (TIS), Systems Applications and Products (SAP) and Train Management Dispatch System (TMDS)
