Job Summary:


Reporting to the Manager, Field Operations, the Manager, Health & Safety is responsible for providing professional leadership for the Health & Safety team, and is responsible for the development, advancement, and successful implementation of the Galore Creek Health & Safety Program.

The Manager, Health & Safety, will foster safety leadership and the culture of safety across the Project, and ensure that appropriate safety systems are in place as the Project progresses towards a higher level of activity, including road and tunnel construction.

The role includes responsibility for ensuring that the practices and principles of occupational Health & Safety in design and construction are incorporated through all stages of project development.


The incumbent contributes as a senior member of the Galore Creek project and site operations teams in planning, budgeting, and execution, providing critical oversight on the Project's overall Health & Safety performance.


Overview:


The position will be based out of the Smithers office with travel to the Project site, between Vancouver, Smithers, and local communities, as required.

Located in Tahltan Territory in northwestern British Columbia, Galore Creek is one of the world's largest undeveloped copper-gold-silver deposits.

Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, leading by example and fostering a proactive safety and sustainability culture based on common values of health, safety, environment, and communities (HSEC) shared by the Partners (Teck and Newmont).
  • Provide professional leadership and oversight for the Health & Safety team including direct reports (Health & Safety Leads and Coordinators), and contractors, including medical services contractors.
  • Working closely with the Manager, Field Operations, Superintendents, and Supervisors, ensure the safe operations of all field programs and site operations, implement a Health & Safety Management System in alignment with the Partners' HSEC policies and standards, and at all times holding the safety of employees, contractors and consultants as our greatest responsibility.
  • Ensure that all Health & Safety programs are appropriate to the scope and scale of the operations, and develop to be fit for purpose for future scopes. 2023 field activities are planned to include operations of two or more camps, air operations including fixed wing and multiple helicopters, multiple drill rigs, geophysical surveys, environmental baseline surveys, road maintenance and construction. In future years, substantial road and tunnel construction activities are anticipated, and the Health & Safety program will need to be built up in preparation for this increased construction activity.
  • Oversee the overall management, implementation, and continuous improvement of safety programs, including evaluation and gap analysis of the safety management system, and development and implementation of the strategy and approach to appropriately advance the safety program in preparation for increased project activity, including road and tunnel construction.
  • Manage the advancement and implementation of the Health & Safety program, ensuring alignment with, and leveraging the owners Health & Safety programs, and ensuring compliance with relevant legislation.
  • Ensure full compliance with all applicable Health & Safety legal requirements, including the continued implementation of the Galore Creek Joint Health & Safety Committee.
  • Monitor and report on safety statistics to identify trends, and proactively implement strategies to improve safety on the Project. Report leading and lagging indicators, conditions, incidences.
  • Ensure that Galore Creek maintains an uptodate Operational Risk Register, with ongoing review to assess for newly identified hazards, and continuous improvement in managing risks.
  • Ensure that the project provides appropriate training, and maintains high quality training records for all site personnel, including employees, contractors and consultants.
