Temporary part-time; 1 year maternity leave coverage

Role Description
***The Department of Critical Care Medicine requires a research assistant to support an active research program focused on critically ill patients. Our research team includes clinician-scientists conducting peer-reviewed clinical research studies, in addition to clinical associates in research training programs, graduate students, research fellows, clinical fellows, and medical students.

Summary of Duties (not meant to be all encompassing)

Duties will include but not be limited to:

  • Efficient and accurate data collection and management in accordance with ICH Good Clinical Practice, TCPS2, and local regulations.
  • Screening patients for eligibility in all applicable critical care areas and wards
  • Communication with participants and substitute decision makers to obtain informed consent for research participation
  • Demonstrating knowledge of and adherence to policies and procedures of various regulatory bodies and agencies guiding the research projects, and ability to interpret regulations to ensure compliance.
  • Coordination of any necessary audit processes and quality improvement
  • Liaising with each study project manager, Principal investigator and data manager as required, regarding adherence to the protocol, guidelines, data protection, and ethics.
  • Provision of regular and ad hoc reports and updates, both written and verbal, to all study participants and sponsors.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent clinical credentials
  • Ability to utilize a hospital's electronic patient record system and accurately record data for a study's case report form
  • Experience in a clinical research environment
  • Ideally, experience in clinical areas, and comfort in a critical care environment
  • Compassion in communicating with families in critical situations
  • Excellent understanding of clinical research ethics (i.e., informed consent process, patient recruitment)
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Excellent communication, both written and verbal (writing sample may be required)
  • Competent computing skills including word processing, internet and spreadsheet manipulation (Microsoft Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat)
  • Capable of working both individually and within a team environment
  • Demonstrated knowledge of ICH Good Clinical Practice, PHIPA, FDA and Health Canada regulations, and training in Transportation of Dangerous Goods
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
