Under the direction of the Director, Information & Learning Technology, the Recording and Classroom Specialist is responsible for troubleshooting audio-visual equipment, creating complex and technical documentation and user support guides, responding to service requests, and checking that work is completed to the satisfaction of the client.

The incumbent will also direct the activities of casual staff and provide orientation to others on work procedures and practices.

The Recording and Classroom Specialist is a key player in the Information & Learning Technology area's recording service.

The incumbent is responsible for setting up and maintaining recording equipment to capture and livestream live classical music performances (microphones, mixing boards, etc.), operating recording audio-visual equipment during live classical music concerts, and using industry standard software to edit audio and video recordings.

The incumbent also lends their expertise to the Faculty of Music's Ed Tech service by overseeing the maintenance, training, and support of classroom presentation systems, as these systems combine professional audio devices (audio interfaces, mixers) and more traditional classroom A/V (displays, video switchers) in order to meet the diverse teaching needs of Music instructors.

This is a sessional position from August to May annually.

The ability to work a flexible schedule that includes regular evening and weekend work during peak performance seasons is required.


Your responsibilities will include:

  • Settingup and maintaining audio/visual systems
  • Providing instruction on how to use equipment
  • Scheduling the setup and takedown of equipment required for events
  • Implementing a rollout plan for new audiovisual technologies
  • Editing postproduction audio and/or visual material
  • Running audiovisual equipment to support productions activities
  • Troubleshooting routine hardware/software issues
  • Recommending the purchase of equipment and supplies

Essential Qualifications:

  • Advanced College Diploma (3 years) or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum three (3) years experience with audio visual and multimedia technologies, with a focus on classical music concerts and classroom technology.
  • Demonstrated experience setting up, maintaining, and operating recording equipment (microphones, mixing boards, etc.) to capture and livestream live classical music performances.
  • Demonstrated experience with the following required: audio over IP systems (DANTE); operation of Sony F family of cameras and associated lenses (e.g., FS7, FX3, and lenses); Allen & Heath SQ mixer series; Mackie Big Knob series of studio monitor controller interfaces; Kramer and Crestron video switchers; OBS and YouTube to livestream classical music performance.
  • Experience in training faculty or professional clients in the use of AV and classroom equipment.
  • Demonstrated experience with editing postproduction audio or visual materials. Experience with Reaper and DaVinci Resolve a must.
