SCOPE

Reporting to the AERO Engineer in Residence (EIR), Mechanical Industrial and Aerospace Engineering (MIAE), the incumbent serves as a resource person for faculty, students and staff in regard, but not limited to the maintenance, fabrication, repair, assembly, operation, demonstration and proper use of laboratory equipment.

This may also include manufacturing support.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain MIAE laboratory equipment and facilities.
  • Support the laboratory demonstrators and faculty and focus on the critical issues in laboratory operation and safety.
  • Ensure adequate supplies, materials and equipment are maintained for assigned laboratories and projects.
  • Initiate and prepare documentation related to purchase transactions. Prepare estimates of time, labor, and materials to be used on assigned tasks.
  • Write detailed procedures for operation and maintenance of complex and technical equipment.
  • Participate in the Health and Safety Program. Work in accordance with the provisions of Health and Safety program that includes the Occupational Safety and Health Act for the province of Quebec, the Workplace Hazardous Material Information System, and the MIAE Health and Safety Committee.
  • Supervise students in the preparation, fabrication, and testing of various components for teaching projects in MIAE teaching engineering laboratories. Plan and complete projects to develop mechanical, electrical or structural components and equipment to meet specified user and laboratory needs.
  • Work with undergraduate and graduate students on their projects.
  • Work cooperatively with others to meet the changing requirements within the Department and Faculty, which may include additional duties and responsibilities.
  • Assist in the preparation of reports, laboratory experiments, analyses and correspondence.
  • Operate a variety of hand, power, and machine tools, or electromechanical, electrohydraulic equipment specific to the job requirements; test and calibrate equipment. May operate various equipment including welding machines, grinders, sanders, presses, mills, lathes, band saws, meters, measuring devices, instrumentation, data acquisition, and 3D printers.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Professional DEC (3year technical program) in an aircraft maintenance technology program or mechanical technology program or equivalent relevant industrial experience, and four years of related experience required.
  • Ability to solve complex technical problems.
  • Ability to lead and train others in technical engineering support work.
  • Understanding of electronics and mechanical engineering terminology, laboratory processes, and typical equipment.
  • Ability to use technical laboratory equipment and read engineering drawings.
  • Experience in engineering design practices and software/CAD.
  • Ability to operate machining and fabrication tools.
  • Good knowledge (Level 4) of spoken and written English and basic knowledge (Level 3) of spoken French.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel to create and format documents and spreadsheets and the ability to learn and adapt to new software as required. Ability to use a personal computer.
  • Must be a team player.
  • Must demonstrate excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • The incumbent will have to work evenings from time to time depending on the semester's laboratory scheduling. May be required more than one evening per week, up to five if necessary.
  • Will require use of respiratory protection and enrollment in the University's Respiratory Protection Program.
  • Will require use of hearing protection and enrollment in the University's Hearing Conservation Program will be required.
  • Have physical ability to lift/carry/move without assistance up to 23 kg (50 lbs.) and with assistance up to 34 kg (75 lbs.).
