Health Journalist

Toronto, Ontario, Canada The Canadian Press Full time

Health Journalist

The Canadian Press is seeking a candidate for a career-defining position as a national health reporter. This opportunity is intended for a proven journalist with an established record of success. The ideal candidate has deep experience in health coverage and a proven track record covering all the components of a complex beat.

The position is based in Toronto but there is flexibility around the location of the job depending on the successful candidate.

Responsibilities

The role demands a diverse skill set that includes fluency in digital journalism tools, stellar writing skills, a meticulous approach to research and exceptional interview chops. The successful candidate should also be familiar with multimedia storytelling and have a fundamental understanding of data analysis.

We want a self-starter who can work well in a team environment. This person should take direction well, welcome input and come to story meetings with an array of ideas. Experience following a complex beat is key, as is the ability to network, find hidden voices and navigate a bureaucracy to reach sources.

Health-care stories involve complicated issues and personalities that intersect governments at all levels. They also often touch on private sector interests that range from Big Pharma to development and manufacturing. Canada's post-secondary education institutions are home to world-leading research. And there are numerous advocacy groups and agencies invested in influencing health initiatives and outcomes. The successful candidate will be expected to follow developments in all of these areas and more, as well as track trends in wellness, break important news and craft insightful features and explanatory pieces.

Requirements

Story sources and contacts are a roadmap to these worlds, and the successful candidate understands the importance of cultivating and adding to them.

They are also able to produce smart, nuanced stories that acknowledge that issues in health care are often intertwined with deeply personal experiences in multiple sectors for ordinary Canadians. The successful candidate knows how to harness the voices of real people to detail the successes, failures, gaps and opportunities in the health sector.

This position will report to the Arts-Life-Health Editor, who is based in Toronto.

This job is funded by a partnership between The Canadian Press and the Canadian Medical Association to amplify our coverage of this sector. The CMA has no role in hiring, assigning, editing, distributing, or approving any of the content, all of which is the exclusive responsibility of CP, which will own copyright to all the content. We have experience with partnerships like this one and we are proud of the opportunity it represents.

COVID-19

The Canadian Press is committed to maintaining a safe and healthy work environment for employees. Offers of employment are conditional upon the candidate providing proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 or proof of an upcoming appointment to become fully vaccinated against COVID-19, by the time of start date. The company has a process in place to provide suitable accommodation to employees who are unable to obtain vaccines against COVID-19 for qualifying medical or religious exemptions.

Please apply by June 5, 2024

The Canadian Press is committed to fostering an inclusive, barrier-free and accessible environment. As an equal-opportunity employer, The Canadian Press supports the goals of employment equity. The Canadian Press respects all diverse groups, including but not limited to women, Indigenous Peoples, members of visible minorities and people with disabilities.
