Position Overview

***: The Health and Safety Specialist is responsible for leading and supporting the development and implementation of the hospital's occupational health and safety programs, including the planning, implementation, evaluation and revision of occupational health and safety policies and procedures in accordance with legislative and regulatory requirements.


This position helps to ensure a safe environment for employees, physicians, volunteers and students and to ensure overall patient safety.

The roles and responsibilities of the Occupational Health and Safety Specialist include, but are not limited to:

Leads and supports the development and implementation of occupational health and safety policies, procedures and programs in accordance with legislative and regulatory requirements.


Activities include:
planning, implementing, training, evaluating and revising policies, procedures and programs such as, but not limited to:

  • Musculoskeletal Disorder Prevention Program
  • Workplace Violence Prevention Program
  • Hazard Reporting and Investigation
  • WHMIS
Lead the Joint Health and Safety Committee(s) to ensure the committee meets regularly, conducts workplace inspections and risk assessments and ensures documentation is in compliance with the OHSA;
Track workplace incidents/accidents for reporting and statistical analysis, as well as training and performance indicators.
Plan and participate in N95 mask fit testing sessions;
Participate in the planning, organization and delivery of various training related to occupational health and safety (Violence Prevention Program, General Orientation, etc.);
Investigate and follow up on health and safety complaints and provide recommendations to stakeholders.

REQUIREMENTS:

College degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or related program with equivalent experience. Training in ergonomics is an asset;
Minimum of 3 years experience in an occupational health department of a health care facility;
Must have knowledge of applicable legislation such as the Public Hospitals Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act (WSIA);
Certification of "health sector specific" Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) certification training or in the process of becoming certified;
Certified member of the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or in the process of becoming certified;
Highly developed communication skills in both English and French (written and spoken) and interpersonal skills;
Must be computer literate and proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite.
