Job Summary:


The Youth Support Worker at Orca Lelum plays a vital role in assisting clients with their physical, economic, recreational, social, emotional and daily life skills development.

This individual supports clients to achieve the greatest degree of independence and quality of life possible.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participates in the assessment, goal setting and program planning (Personal Service Plan) for the youth being supported, this includes assessing the youth's relevant skill strengths and needs;
  • Provide general supervision within the facility and while out in the community to ensure the safety and wellbeing of clients;
  • Fulfill the role and responsibilities of a caregiver as set out in a client's care plan and in accordance with provincial legislation and standards;
  • Implement and utilize, on a consistent basis, supports and interventions that help develop positive behaviors in clients and address problematic behaviors.
  • Act as a positive role model, provide stable companionship and constructive support in all matters personal, health and emotional; and take pro-active and focused actions to support skill development in clients, including daily life skills, emotion regulation and recreational abilities.
  • Regardless of one's background, caregivers will work respectfully, knowledgeably and effectively with the Coast Salish children, families, service providers and community members, and create cultural safety for the clients and other Coast Salish people with whom caregivers come into contact with.
  • Supports the mental and physical health of clients based on the direction of health professionals; fill client prescriptions and oversee the administering and dispensing of medication;
  • Supports clients with personal hygiene, bathing, grooming, dressing and toileting appropriately;
  • Recognizes and responds appropriately to escalations, crisis and emergency situations, which may include aggressive or violent behaviour by clients and emergency medical situations to eliminate or minimize harm or injury; reports all critical incidents to the Youth Supervisor, Program Manager and Executive Director.
  • Maintains daily logs of clients' emotional wellbeing, ability to self-regulate in the face of difficult emotions, recreational and cultural activities, and behaviour intervention strategies used, hygiene, cultural connections and overall wellbeing. Ensures that all required documentation is complete and accurate before the end of shift and provides a verbal debrief to co-workers at the start and end of every shift. Reads and initials the staff communication log, daily logs, meeting minutes, behavior intervention plans, care plans, policies and all other key operational documents for every shift worked and ensures awareness of and changes in client's care plans and operational policies and procedures.
Follows provincial legislation, regulations and standards when working with clients, including but not limited to:
a. _Child, Family and Community Service Act _(CFCSA) and the CFCSA regulation;
b. Standards for Staffed Children's Residential Services;
c. Standards for Foster Homes;
d. _Community Care and Assisted Living Act_ (CCALA);
e. CCALA Residential Care Regulation; and

f. Any policy or practice directives issued under the authority of the CFCSA and Kw'umut Lelum Child and Family Services

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Diploma in Child and Youth Care, Social Work, Criminology or equivalent training/experience
