Department of Biology, Faculty of Science

Position Context:


Under the direction of the immediate supervisor, provides technical assistance in support of activities in a laboratory, a workshop, in the field, etc.

Carries out elementary assays. Prepares materials and equipment. Records data. Maintains equipment.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepares the material, solutions, equipment for use in laboratories, projects, etc.
  • Carries out a variety of tasks, such as mixing, identifying, weighing, titration, sectioning, etc. of solutions and various materials, using appropriate instruments and equipment.
  • Assists in the preparation of plans and models. May draw sketches and table as requested.
  • Completes standard reports.
  • Informs immediate supervisor of any irregularities or defects; takes measures to rectify the situation.
  • Maintains and performs minor repairs of the equipment and instruments under area of responsibility. Ensures cleanliness of work areas.
  • Maintains inventory of supplies, instruments and equipment used in the immediate work area; compiles a list of items to be purchased.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical support to departmental infrastructures (Phytotron, Building and specialized equipment, Receiving).
  • Performs routine maintenance and cleaning of phytotron facility equipment including central vacuum system, portable vacuums, soil mixer, autoclave, hoist, and greenhouse hoses. Cleans and prepares growth chambers for new experiments weekly. Provide support to annual and seasonal maintenances.
  • Review service agreements and advise manager for discrepancies, check deadlines and request quotes for renewal of service agreements (annually).
  • Schedule and coordinate site visits for preventive maintenance and repairs in 3 different buildings (Stewart, Bellini, Pulp and Paper). Act as contact person for site visits with service representatives.
  • Submit work order requests on FAMIS for minor repairs related to the building. Provide onsite assistance to the building (deputy) director for liaison with University Services in case of emergencies or repairs. Help maintain key databases.
  • Receive packages, log shipment and contact recipients. Ensure the storage of perishable and nonperishable packages as appropriate.
  • Assist users with liquid nitrogen, dry ice and waste disposal. Perform the weekly eye wash stations inspections.

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:
Knowledge of safety and good practices for working in a research and academic environment. Attention to detail. Capacity to work as a team member and cover up for colleagues as well as working independently. Ability to take initiatives. Possess excellent problem-solving abilities to identify and resolve technical issues efficiently. Good communication skills to effectively interact with clients, external entities and colleagues. Able to troubleshoot issues and make recommendations to resolve building or equipment issues.

Troubleshooting research lab equipment is an asset (ex:
autoclaves, dishwashers, centrifuges, freezers).

Possess good time management skills to effectively prioritize and manage multiple tasks, ensuring timely responses and resolutions for technical issues.

Ability to maintain booking schedule and keep track of user logging sheets. Ability to build strong collaboration and teamwork skills.

Knowledge of French and English:

McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing.

The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level 4 on a scale of 0-4.
