Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada New Directions Full time

New Directions is a social service agency offering a wide range of resources and services that foster people's hopes and dreams and their community.

Child Home Services (CHS) is one of the many programs offered by New Directions; this program provides homes for children and youth with behavioral and emotional difficulties. Our community-based resources are designed to promote a sense of belonging and provide opportunities to engage in a meaningful life. This is achieved by creating a home environment that welcomes the participation of the child or youth as a member, supporting his or her pursuit of interests and goals, and helping maintain and strengthen the bond between the child or youth and his or her significant others. We provide an environment that is non-judgmental, safe and caring.

If you have a passion for supporting children & youth in the community you will:

  • Establish meaningful, caring, and respectful relationships with children and youth
  • Provide medical, emotional, environmental, physical and behavioural support
  • Participate in programming to meet the individual goals of children and youth
  • Accompany children & youth to activities and appointments such as grocery shopping, medical appointments, community events and home maintenance
  • Provide assistance with personal care routines such as lifts, transfers, personal hygiene, and nutrition support
  • Complete all required documentation effectively
  • Liaise with the education system and other community resources

Points to consider:

  • This home is located in the Tyndall Park/North Winnipeg area. Access to reliable bus service is unpredictable on evenings and weekends so it is preferred that applicants have access to reliable transportation
  • This role is physically demanding. Health Care Aide training and experience is considered an asset
  • The individuals in this home may display physical behaviours of concern, so it is important for staff to have a good understanding of the support plan and to communicate effectively as a team
  • New Directions is dedicated to the ongoing learning and development of our employees. You will be expected to engage in the orientation and training opportunities provided to you on your employment journey
  • Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) is considered an asset

Requirements:

  • A High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Valid driver's license, and access to a reliable vehicle
  • 2 years of directly related education and/or experience supporting individuals with autism, intellectual/developmental disabilities, mental health issues, anxiety, selfinjurious behaviour/suicidal ideation, FASD, behavioural problems and emotional difficulties is considered an asset
  • Ability to transfer knowledge and awareness into behaviors and expectations recognized as appropriate by members of identified cultures and by people with lived experience
  • Effective selfcare strategies and ability to remain professional in stressful situations
  • First Aid /C.P.R., and Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Training (NCI) certification are considered assets.
