The vision of the Barrie Native Friendship Centre is to improve the quality of life for all urban-Indigenous / FNMI people in the area, regardless of legal definition by providing a gathering place which promotes unity and wholistic healing within the community at large.

This is accomplished through a network of culturally based programs, services and teachings.

JOB SUMMARY

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Postsecondary education in Indigenous studies and/or combination of equivalent and relevant education and experience;
  • Minimum of 5 years of demonstrated and related work experience within an Indigenous organization or community;
  • Strong knowledge and awareness of Indigenous culture and history;
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team;
  • Good organizational. administrative and report writing skills;
  • Ability to work within the established policies and procedures of the organization;
  • Must have a valid driver's license, a reliable vehicle and be willing to travel when required;
  • Must possess current First Aid and CPR certificate or be willing to be certified; and
  • A Criminal Reference Check (CPIC) with a vulnerable Sector Search (VSS) will be a condition upon employment.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The program ensures Indigenous culture based community services (1:1 peer counselling and group activities) focused on the engagement of Indigenous men and male youth committed to ending violence perpetuated against Indigenous women and girls.
  • This program ensure access to Indigenous knowledge and increase understanding of traditional roles and responsibilities; increase resilience and empower men and male youth to acknowledge and resolve their own trauma; and, promote overall wellbeing and foster community wellness.
  • The worker will plan and deliver programs through an integrated approach, in a team environment, and where appropriate and necessary, in partnership with external agencies. This position requires a flexible work schedule including evenings and weekends.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Maintain strict confidentiality.

Direct supports: provide direct, traditional-based counselling and services to individuals and groups; promote independence and self-actualization, with a sustained move toward identifying outcomes for individuals; provide peer support that supports a dynamic nurturing process; participate in action planning and child welfare-related case conferencing; facilitate talking, teaching and healing circles with a priority to services and supports for Indigenous children, youth and families; acquire, maintain and care for education tools/resources (e.g. language resources, history books, art, and traditional and sacred items); coordinate the delivery of traditional education; promote language restoration and facilitate transmission of cultural knowledge;

Coordination: connect with Elders and/or traditional knowledge resource people to conduct ceremonies; support the planning of traditional ceremony, including dancing, singing, drumming, community and/or seasonal celebrations/ feasts, Elder socials and Elder/senior appreciation activities and Elder/youth knowledge exchange/mentorship activities; coordinate land-based activities; provide space and opportunities for traditional arts and crafts.

Planning and Networking: work with BNFC staff in support of the development of culturally based work plans that best support program and service design and provision for urban Indigenous children, youth and families; work with local stakeholders within non
  • Indigenous community service organizations and institutions to promote cultural awareness; create and maintain a trusted traditional knowledge/Elder resource/directory; create and/or maintain organizational cultural competency, safety and cultural sustainability resources; and provide insight and support in the development of the development of protocols and agreements with the internal and external stakeholders as directed

Training - develop and deliver training as it pertains to cultural competency to and within the respective BNFC community to members of both Indigenous and non
  • Indigenous heritage; and participate in OFIFC training opportunities;

Administration - reporting as required; participation in evaluation activities; ensuring cultural regalia and other items are taken care of in appropriate ways; other administrative duties as required and as determined by BNFC Management.

Secondary Duties and Responsibilities

- Working and contributing with the team to organizational wide special projects (i.e. Pow Wow, Food Committee, Health and Safety Committee, etc.) when needed;

- Representing BNFC when required in committee meetings on behalf of BNFC's Executive Director;

- Assist with yearly budgeting and BNFC wide seasonal program planning;

- Foster and maintain meaningful community partnerships with outside organizations
