  • Language Pathologist enhances the quality of life of patients by assessing, planning and implementing plans of care to maintain, improve and restore communication and swallowing function. The Speech-Language Pathologist also supervises/mentors students and new clinical staff.

PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

Patient Care Responsibilities:

  • Review referrals for appropriateness and prioritization.
  • Provide assessment, consultation and treatment of referred patients.
  • Utilize evidencebased practice and best practice guidelines in the speech pathology plan of care.
  • Utilize outcome measures to guide clinical decisionmaking.
  • Analyze and interpret results to develop a treatment plan.
  • Establish treatment goals in collaboration with the patient and family.
  • Provide education to patient and families as it relates to the speech pathology plan of care.
  • Contribute to the development of discharge plans.
  • Participate in interprofessional care planning (i.e. rounds and family conferences).
  • Liaise and collaborate with other professionals and service providers.
  • Document results of patient interventions in accordance with College Standards and Hospital Policy.
  • Provide direction and supervision to speech pathology students participating in the speech pathology plan of care.

Indirect Care Responsibilities:

  • Enter workload data accurately and at the required frequency.
  • Participate in orientation of new staff.
  • Participate in program and disciplinespecific team meetings.
  • Participate in program and disciplinespecific educational opportunities.
  • Share newly acquired knowledge and skills with SLP colleagues and the interprofessional team.
  • Participate in disciplinespecific, program and organizational committees or councils as requested.
  • Participate in continuous quality improvement and accreditation activities.
  • Complete all mandatory KGH Learning Management System education modules.
  • Participate in approved research.
  • Perform other duties that may be requested.

Professional Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate current registration with the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario.
  • Adhere to the standards for practice outlined by the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario.
  • Perform only those authorized activities that he/she have rostered with the College of Audiologists and Speech Language Pathologists of Ontario.
  • Maintain a high standard of clinical competence through professional development and quality assurance activities.
  • Contribute to the preparation of health science students through knowledge translation, practical learning and mentorship.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's Degree in Speech Language Pathology
  • Registered Member of the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario.
  • Experience in an acute care setting is preferred
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to make sound professional decisions in a medicallycomplex, interprofessional and learning environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and respectfully
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and with a high degree of initiation and motivation
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with others
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask and prioritize tasks to be effective and efficient
  • Demonstrated commitment to evidencebased and best practice
