St. Martha's Regional Hospital (SMRH) in Antigonish is looking for part-time emergency medicine physicians to join their team.

There is an opportunity to get involved in research and/or teaching roles with Dalhousie University, as well as local simulation-based opportunities, if that is of interest.

SMRH is located about two hours from the region's tertiary care pediatric facility, the IWK Health Centre, which offers neonatal support.

Founded in 1906 by the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Martha, St. Martha's Regional Hospital is a facility with approximately 90 beds and over 60 physicians practicing in various medical specialties and sub-specialties. This hospital serves a population of nearly 40,000 from Antigonish, Guysborough, and surrounding areas.
Emergency physicians work alongside colleagues in:
  • anesthesia
  • family medicine
  • geriatrics
  • hospitalist
  • internal medicine (general and sub-specialty covering the 6-bed ICU)
  • obstetrics/gynecology
  • ophthalmology
  • palliative care
  • pediatrics
  • plastic surgery
  • visiting oncology and neurology

Community-based care is further enhanced by a men's and women's health center, chronic pain clinic, methadone clinic, walk-in clinic, and youth clinic at the local high school.

Physicians and all staff at St. Martha's Regional Hospital take great pride in delivering high-quality care to patients and value a collegial work environment. Additionally, the hospital hosts the most active cross-specialty, accredited Continuing Medical Education (CME) program in the province and offers regular medical staff social events.
Responsibilities:
Key duties include providing a full scope of practice as an emergency physician, offering care to patients within the eastern zone. The physician will be accountable to the zone department head for emergency medicine for their professional responsibilities and quality of practice, and will operate within the Medical Staff Bylaws of the Nova Scotia Health Authority. ATLS, ACLS, PALS, and advanced Airway training are mandatory.
