We are looking for an HVAC Technician to support our Real Property Planning and Management Branch (RPPM) in Ottawa. The successful candidate would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity. Working at the NRC would provide you with the opportunity to work with our unique facilities which include industrial, commercial, residential, specialised and scientific equipment. Our HVAC Technician provides repair, maintenance and installation services for a variety of equipment and building systems of various facilities in the National Capital Region, including:
- Chillers
- HVAC
- Refrigeration systems
- Energy management systems
- Instrumentation and control systems
The HVAC Technician's maintenance activities are carried out in response to emergency situations, malfunctions and as part of regular preventative maintenance programs. He/she is responsible for equipment and control systems during emergency call-ins, scheduled overtime and power shutdowns. He/she must comply with and maintain government refrigerant regulations and records.
As a federal employer, the NRC offers the opportunity for a much greater work-life balance and a cleaner work environment Our HVAC Technician typically work a 37.5 hour work week with only the occasional need for overtime – but no shift work, and no regularly scheduled weekends. Couple this balanced work schedule with a pension plan, a wide range of benefits including comprehensive health and dental plans, pension and insurance plans, vacation starts at 3 weeks, 3 weeks of sick leave yearly, our offices are closed between December 25th and January 1st, we have 5 days of family related leave and employees are entitled to 2 days of personal leave. Screening CriteriaApplicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:
Education
Secondary School Diploma according to provincial standards. Valid Ontario 313A-Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic or an equivalent Inter-Provincial Red Seal Journeymen's Certificate of Qualification. Ozone depletion certificate. Completion of Working at Heights and Elevated Work Platform training could be considered as an asset. For information on certificates and diplomas issued abroad, please see Degree equivalency
Experience
Significant and recent experience in servicing/installing/troubleshooting refrigeration and air conditioning systems and components such as chillers, air handling units, fan coils as well as packaged air conditioning systems; Significant and recent experience Building Automation System; Significant and recent experience in Control systems such Direct Digital Controls, Programmable logic controller (PLC), Variable Frequency Drives, Pneumatic devices including troubleshooting and performing On-board diagnostics tests of electronic and solid state devices; and Significant and recent experience in building heating and cooling systems.
* Significant is defined as: minimum of two (2) to six (6) years of experience.
Recent is defined as: within the last two (2) years.
Condition of Employment
Reliability Status Must be able to possess and retain the physical capabilities to perform the position which include but may not be limited to: crouching, bending, twisting, walking, climbing stairs & ladders, ability to hear to diagnose mechanical troubles, and the ability to handle heavy and bulky objects.

Technical Competencies
- Solid knowledge of refrigeration and air conditioning in accordance with current codes and standards.
- Solid knowledge of safety practices and procedures relevant to the trade.
- Solid knowledge of energy management systems (DDC, PLC, Frequency drives, and process controllers).
- Solid ability to read mechanical schematics/blueprints and interpret manufacturer's specifications.
