What can I expect to do in this role?: In the Provincial Emergency Operations Centre section of Emergency Management Ontario (EMO) you will:

  • serve in a leadership or staff officer Incident Management System (IMS) function in the PEOC
- lead, coordinate, monitor and provide project management for PEOC projects and initiatives
- assess potential and actual incidents for consequential impacts and determine appropriate response actions
- undertake special projects and/or research and analysis and prepares reports and recommendations

How do I qualify?:

Mandatory:

  • You are able to obtain provincial security clearances; federal security clearances may be required for certain projects or incidents.
  • You are able to wear a uniform and personal protective equipment in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • You are willing to work irregular and extended hours particularly during emergencies and be oncall on a regular basis, often on short notice.
  • You are able to travel within Ontario and occasionally to other provinces, territories and the USA.

Emergency Management Experience:
You have demonstrated knowledge, gained through education, training and experience, of:

  • emergency management doctrine, and legislation to assist and advise communities, senior management, and stakeholders about emergency response and to develop operational plans
- emergency management plans, including, but not limited to the Provincial Emergency Response Plan, the Provincial Nuclear Emergency Response Plan, the

Ontario Mass Evacuation Plan:
Far North, the Joint Emergency Management Steering Committee Service Level Evacuation Standards, various ministry plans etc.
- federal and provincial resources and teams, their roles, responsibilities and capabilities including, but not limited to Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosives (CBRNE) teams and Heavy Urban Search and Rescue (HUSAR), Emergency Medical Assistance Team (EMAT), etc.

  • First Nations emergency management planning and response factors and considerations such as risks, hazards, operating environment, roles and responsibilities and capabilities of key partners

Communication and Interpersonal Skills:

  • You have superior oral and written communications skills to convey complex ideas, develop communication materials (i.e. briefing notes, business cases, etc.) and presentations.
  • You have strong relationship building, interpersonal and political acuity skills to maintain positive working relationships with staff, management, and a wide array of internal and external stakeholders across all levels of government, industry and the private sector.
  • You have the ability to facilitate stakeholder meetings, and to address stakeholder issues or needs.
  • You demonstrate cultural awareness and sensitivity when working with people of diverse cultural backgrounds.

Analytical Skills:

  • You have analytical skills to conduct research, develop plans and procedures as well as assess exercises and training.
  • You can assess potential or actual emergency situations, conduct hazard identification and risk assessment.
  • You can provide advice, options and recommendations, identify gaps in response and provide appropriate options, anticipate consequences and future needs.

Planning and Program/Project Management Skills:

  • You have knowledge of operational planning, incident action planning, contingency planning.
  • You have demonstrated knowledge of and experience with project management processes and principles.
