We are currently looking for a synthetic chemist who will be able to perform complex and diverse organic synthesis, purifications, and characterization under the supervision of a researcher.


  • Perform organic chemistry experiments according to established inhouse protocols and safety procedures.
  • Synthesize known and new organic compounds, including glycolipids and their intermediates, as part of a multistep organic synthesis approach.
  • Conduct organic reactions in an inert atmosphere of argon or nitrogen using gas cylinders.
  • Run purification methods including thin layer chromatography, flash chromatography and recrystallization and prepare sample for analysis.
  • Assist in carryingout routine maintenance and clean up tasks.
  • Compile records and interpret experimental or analytical results to draft a report and/or contribute to a manuscript.
  • Report data in a comprehensible manner to supervisor and team members.

Screening Criteria:

Education:

Bachelor's degree in organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry or similar field.

A Master's degree would be considered an asset.

Experience:

  • Significant experience providing technical support in organic chemistry.
  • Experience in synthesis and purification of chemical compounds.
  • Experience with methods and techniques related to preparing for, conducting, documenting and analyzing experiments/tests in organic chemistry including multistep syntheses, homogenous or heterogeneous catalysis, and preparation of airsensitive compounds.
  • Significant experience with the safe operation, maintenance, verification, repair and installation of equipment and laboratory apparatus such as chemical reactors and instrumentation required to characterize chemical compounds.

  • Knowledge of applied practices and concepts relating to organic chemistry. General knowledge of related industry trends, developments and best practices.
  • Knowledge relating to scalingup syntheses.
  • Knowledge relating to the synthesis of airsensitive compounds.
  • Advanced knowledge related to the purification of chemical compounds such as crystallization and chromatography.
  • Knowledge of occupational health and safety best practices required to create and maintain a safe and healthy laboratory/work environment.
  • Ability to analyze and discuss technical issues, troubleshoot and solve problems relating to chemical synthesis and the operation of chemical reactors and analytical instrumentation required to characterize chemical compounds.
  • Ability to write reports and draft protocols and standard operating procedures.

Relocation:

Relocation assistance will be determined in accordance with the NRC's directives.

Compensation:

From $58,445 to $80,040 per annum.
