Overview:
The Research Manager is primarily responsible for designing, supervising, and analyzing information from laboratory experiments required by sponsors.

This includes, but is not limited to, in vivo retinal imaging of mice and other pre-clinical animal models, of people in health and disease, and histological samples or in vitro cell cultures.

The incumbent is also responsible for the general functioning, operation, and maintenance of the lab.

This position is contingent upon funding.

Responsibilities:

Research

  • Develop research initiatives, including the selection of instrumentation, methodology and approach, and statistical planning
  • Analyzes efficiency and prepares Standard Operating Procedures in coordination with technicians, engineers, and trainees
  • In collaboration with other faculty, lab staff and trainees (graduate and coop students), is responsible for the daytoday experiments for ongoing studies, those about to commence, and the coordination of each project to ensure effective use of resources
  • Coordinates patient recruitment and scheduling amongst laboratory and clinical personnel
  • Designs, tests and validates data collection protocols, tools, and instruments, including problem solving and trouble shooting
  • Conducts research according to regulatory requirements and ensures that the data collected is timely and accurate
  • Manages data collection and analysis methodologies for all stake holders
  • Analyzes and presents research data to Principal Investigator, industry sponsors and various collaborators
Supervision and Training

  • Supervises, and participates in the hiring of, all graduate students, coop and/or summer students. Responsible for the hiring, professional development, and performance management of a direct report
  • Develops and provides indepth training of all personnel, including, but not limited to, staff, students and other users
  • Instructs all personnel on the use, maintenance and safety of all equipment and laboratory procedures
  • Supervises and delivers safety training to all personnel. This including the coordination of all lab specific safety training and WHMIS
Administration

  • Complete regulatory documentation for human and animalbased experiments. This includes writing the protocols, making modifications, ensuring compliance, and filing annual reports. This alsoincludes presenting evaluation results (verbally and in writing) and making recommendations for further development of the program or initiative by synthesizing and transferring knowledge generated by the study in question
  • Participate in audits of regulatory documentation, budgets, equipment and space
  • Assist in grant preparation and submission
  • Prepare and submit progress reports to granting agencies
  • Coordinate collaborations both locally and across institutions
  • Write/edit scientific publications for accuracy, including data checking, interpretation, and presentation of results
  • Assist with the development of publication of articles in peerreviewed journals and presentations at professional meetings
  • Conduct literature searches and reviews as needed, including consulting with other researchers in the field
Finance

  • Obtains competitive quotes and requests discounts for equipment purchases and prepares documentation for all purchases and recommends purchases for all current and future projects
  • In collaboration with the Principal Investigator, develops budgets for all grant proposals
  • Responsible to track and oversee all financial transactions monthly; report/liaise with the school's Financial Operations Manager when problems arise
  • Arrange service contracts for laboratory equipment
Laboratory Maintenance

  • Manages the overall maintenance of the physical laboratory space and equipment and recommends renovations when required
  • Coordinates and schedules general lab cleaning and liaise with Optometry administration for annual laboratory inspections
  • Liaise with contractors and/or service personnel when required

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's degree or equivalent related experience and/or education
  • An MSc is preferred
  • A minimum of three years' experience working in at least one of the following fields: regulatory science, administration, or human and/or animalbased research
  • Experience in human sample collection and/or the willingness to complete training is required
  • Experience in writing and producing diverse publications and other communication deliverables
  • Must have broad experience and demonstrated strong proficiency in lab skills necessary to conduct scientific research
  • Demonstrated leadership ability required
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problemsolving skills
  • Proven proficiency in writing, editing, and proofreading documents for content in a range of styles
  • Interpersonal skills and relationship building experience across teams with a wide variety of stakeholders
  • Tact, judgement, and diplomacy are essential. Must be comfortable deal
