The Structural Fitter's primary function is to layout, position, align, fit and secure large and complex structural components and framing based on technical drawings, schematics, welding process specifications, and other documentation in a structural steel plant.


Job Responsibilities & Key Accountabilities:

  • Read and interpret drawings, blueprints, sketches, diagrams and welding process specifications, including the interpretation of welding symbols and tolerances in fractions, decimals and metric dimensions.
  • Rig, hoist and move materials to storage areas or within worksite using overhead cranes using established safety precautions.
  • Prepare work staging area and construct patterns or jigs / templates as guides for layouts.
  • Determine the materials required, and plan the sequence of tasks to cut metal most efficiently. Lay out reference points and patterns on heavy metal according to specifications.
  • Assemble and fit metal sections and plates to form complete units or subunits using tack welding, bolting, riveting or other methods.
  • Set up and operate various heavyduty metalworking machines cutting using saws, iron workers, torches, plasma and gouging, manual or semiautomatic welding machines, grinders.
  • Brace weldments to minimize distortion from welding and perform heat straightening of weldments. Perform dimensional inspections
  • Ensure standards for safe working conditions are observed in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and participate in regular safety talks. Perform visual inspection of equipment including cranes, welding machines, cutters and other tools to ensure they are in safe working condition.
  • Provide feedback on design improvements through communication with the Foreman and assist in preparation of Engineering Change Request.
  • Ensure all works meets the guidelines and specifications of a first class fitter; including layout (comprehensive knowledge) and burning.
  • Works overtime and/or weekends as required.

Job Specific Requirement/Knowledge/Experience:

  • A minimum of 5 years of equivalent work experience in a large/heavy custom steel fabrication environment. Shift Work may be required.
  • Previous experience working within an ISO9001 environment is preferred. Must be familiar with all position welding and a variety of welding processes (i.e. GMAW, FCAW, SAW)
  • Must be able to work to close tolerances.
  • Should be able to lift up to 50lbs
