Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) Maritimes Science Sector is comprised of staff that conducts research and monitoring to provide advice to support the management of all the Canadian fisheries and other aquatic activities of our Maritimes region.


The Maritimes Science Program has 5 priority areas:

populations and ecosystem assessments; safe navigation and emergency response; mitigation of ecosystem stressors; adaptation to a changing environment; and marine spatial planning.

Maritimes Science Branch consists of over 400 staff working from multiple locations in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

Major duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage assigned human, financial and material resources.
  • Lead or provide advice to DFO staff and external partners on development of project proposals and study design.
  • Act as liaison between and provide support to DFO Science staff and Indigenous partners to increase collaborations in science activities, planning, and advice.
  • Support consideration of Indigenous science, knowledge, and principles in departmental decisionmaking, including analysis of gaps, challenges, opportunities, and resources required to support these changes.
  • Undertake strategic engagement with Indigenous communities.

EDUCATION:

  • Graduation with a degree from a recognized university
in natural, physical or applied science.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience writing scientific papers or reports.
  • Experience in designing and conducting field surveys
and/or laboratory experiments.

  • Experience organizing and conducting scientific work in
aquatic science as a project lead.

  • Experience in management of human and financial
resources.

  • Experience in statistical analysis of ecological data.
  • Experience working with the marine or fishing industry,
Indigenous organizations, or stakeholder groups.

  • Graduation with a postgraduate degree, with specialization in a field relevant to the duties of the
position.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience conducting scientific work in assessment of aquatic stocks.
  • Experience conducting scientific work in biodiversity science or conservation biology.
  • Experience conducting scientific work in oceanography.
  • Experience working in scientific studies of freshwater/anadromous species and ecosystems.
