**SUMMARY**

The Scientific Affairs Specialist is responsible for providing the scientific foundation for natural health product ingredients and products to support Marketing, Regulatory and Innovation activities. This includes, but is not limited to, providing scientific recommendations and substantiation for product innovation and renovation efforts; ongoing review of new research to support current product claims; and evaluation of ingredient safety.

Skilled at audience appropriate knowledge translation, this position works closely with Marketing to provides the scientific foundation for consumer facing marketing materials and the development of all scientific training content. This position is knowledgeable in research methodology and nutritional supplementation and provides scientific recommendations on ingredients and technologies that support business objectives and drive consumer health.

**ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.**
- Passionate about monitoring new ingredient and technology trends with the ability to monitor and mine current scientific research on ingredients used in natural health products, with a focus on omega-3 but also including vitamins, minerals, probiotics, botanicals, and enzymes.
- Ongoing maintenance of scientific literature reviews in key business priority areas.
- Prepare Summary of Safety & Efficacy Evidence for Class III Regulatory submissions for new and existing products and support Regulatory projects as required.
- Skilled at audience appropriate knowledge translation to provide scientific foundation for consumer facing marketing materials.
- In collaboration with the Marketing Team, lead the development of all scientific training content for internal (employees) and external (customers, consumers) education.
- Ability to review and ensure consumer-facing marketing materials are aligned with the supporting science.
- Stays current on and interprets scientific literature and clinical practice trends/needs for new product development and by evaluating formulations for relevance.
- Serve on cross-functional project teams to deliver timely results.
- Must have multi-task project management skills and technical agility, with the ability to prioritize and coordinate projects with a great degree of flexibility.
- Proven excellent oral and written communications skills.

**EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE**
- Post-secondary Degree in science required.
- Master’s degree (MS), in Nutritional Science preferred.
- 2-4 years of experience with preference for experience in the natural health product industry.
- Strong background in nutritional biochemistry and physiology.

**TECHNICAL SKILLS**

Proficient in MS Word, Outlook Excel, and PowerPoint.

**INTERPERSONAL SKILLS**

Ability to communicate with strong relationship management skills. Good listening skills and ability to effectively articulate ideas and solutions to other parties.

**REASONING ABILITY**

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret published scientific and authoritative references, ingredient technical and safety information, and governmental and legal regulatory documentation. Capacity to review natural health product claims and describe adequate supporting substantiation. Ability to effectively synthesize and communicate technical information to a variety of audiences and respond to questions from management.

Intellectual curiosity and an ability to digest complex technical data. Ability to deal with complex problems involving several variables as situations dictate.
