In close cooperation with industry, community and funding partners and College staff, this position is responsible for liaising with industry to identify research needs and opportunities, investigating internal and external resources, developing, planning, implementing, administering and evaluating a variety of applied research and innovation initiatives at CNC, based on industry and College priorities.

This is a position whose decisions and actions have significant impact on the operations of the Division and the College, as accountability is to external as well as internal partners.

This position is directly responsible for generating sufficient new projects at the College to justify the workload and responsible for the recovery of all related project and administrative costs.

Specific Duties

  • Promoting the College's Applied Research & Innovation capacity to industry and funding bodies.
  • Supporting the promotion of a culture of applied research and innovation within the College.
  • Identifying and investigating applied research and innovation opportunities, coordinating collaboration to determine activities the College will pursue.
  • Writing complex and general proposals, developing and negotiating complex budgets, proposals and contracts with funding partners, industry partners and College partners.
  • Ensuring the financial viability of all projects, including all direct and indirect costs.
  • Researching opportunities, in collaboration with content experts, to support proposal development and assessment.
  • Managing the administrative paperwork of projects, from development to inception and completion, including coordinating and tracking reports, budgets, capital purchases etc.
  • Initiating and facilitating collaborative group work in the community and the College, often with groups where no previous relationship exists, and where the reputation of the College's work is at stake.
  • Writing briefing notes, making presentations on behalf of the College.
  • Attending internal and external meetings, communicating with internal and external partners, advising internal and external partners on vision, direction and opportunities as well as internal and external policies and procedures affecting the work.
  • Building and maintaining exceptional industry, funder and partner relationships.
  • Ensuring all stakeholders understand and agree on activities, outcomes, requirements, roles and responsibilities.
  • Understanding and advising on intellectual property requirements for multiple projects.
  • Providing basic support and guidance on: conducting research, reporting on research, financial reporting on research.
  • You will be part of a team actively engaged in contributing to and accomplishing the vision, mission and goals of the College.
  • You will promote a positive work atmosphere and communicating in a professional manner that demonstrates mutual respect at all times.
  • Other duties as assigned by Supervisor.
Skills & Qualifications

  • Minimum bachelor's degree with research components, or diploma and extensive research training, or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Minimum three years' experience with complex, industryconnected applied research projects, including writing and reporting responsibilities, preferably in technologyrelated sectors.

  • Demonstrated understanding of northern research activities, capacity, opportunities in applied research and innovation
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, written skills must be demonstrated, including plain language skills in support of complex material
  • Proven ability to facilitate multistakeholder collaborative group planning, prioritizing and decisionmaking
  • Knowledgeable about research and contract funding opportunities; skilled at ongoing research and assessment of funding opportunities against college capacity
  • Proven success in having complex proposals funded
  • Ability to connect effectively within complex funding agencies and track through complex bureaucracies effectively to identify complete proposal requirements
  • Understanding of intellectual property requirements, ability to advise and negotiate IP agreements
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage all resources for project completion
  • Proven budget development and management skills, at all stages of a project and in collaboration with other stakeholders
  • Knowledge of relevant funding agencies and standards
  • Excellent skills in problemsolving, including the ability to resolve a variety of unusual conditions using both analytical skills and the development of new information on the problem situation
