JOB SUMMARY:


Reporting to the Director, Centre for Studies in Primary Care (CSPC), with functional (dotted line) accountability to the Department Head of Family Medicine and performance accountability to both.

The incumbent will provide support and direction to the overall administration of the Centre for Studies in Primary Care which is the research arm of the Department of Family Medicine (DFM), in the Faculty of Health Science.


Job Description:

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Management of daytoday operations of the CSPC through direction of the research staff and students. Assign and direct staff work assignments. General human resources management and liaison with Queen's Human resources.
  • Identifies the need for staff resources, participates on staffing committees, and makes effective recommendations regarding employee selection.
  • Assesses staff training and development needs and ensures that employees receive training required to improve and sustain successful performance.
  • Management of CSPC operating accounts and the project specific accounts where the projects are directly run by the CSPC, and liaison with the Faculty of Health Sciences Finance Office.
  • Overall management of all CSPC projects, including projects that have designated project managers; direct management of project specifically assigned to the Manager.
  • Provide oversight and management support to Eastern Ontario Network (EON) and I-CREATe programs and other research programs, including human resources, financial support and ensuring that programs associated with the CSPC are aligned with its Vision and Mission
  • Report to and participate in the CSPC Advisory Council meetings and present the Annual Report at the Annual General Meeting, CSPC.
  • Support Resident Research, including the annual Primary Care Research Day and, potentially, supporting residents In their scholarly projects (i.e. teaching, mentoring, providing guidance on projects).
  • Serve on committees, working groups and task forces as required. Responds to inquiries and prepares and presents reports as necessary.
  • Undertakes other duties and special projects as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree, or equivalent experience in a research environment, is essential. A Ph.
D. would be considered an asset but is not a requirement.

  • Proven superior leadership, managerial, interpersonal, and organizational abilities.
  • Experience and skill in effective management of staff and finances in research environments.
  • Experience in managing and interpreting research and financial data.
  • Knowledge of Research Ethics and Privacy Policies, and EDIIA principles
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with research funding agencies considered an asset.
  • Familiarity with Queen's University policies and procedure considered an asset.
  • Consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience.

SPECIAL SKILLS:

  • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written) to deal with a wide variety of individuals in a professional manner and to provide clear and accurate information.
  • Effective organizational skills and strong project management, administrative and supervisory skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and experience in management, including the confidence, tact, discretion, and judgment to work effectively with academic researchers, government representatives and senior administrators externally.
  • Ability to independently manage research projects and to prepare and interpret reports involving the analysis and consolidation of information about research findings.
  • Time management skills and the ability to prioritize work with conflicting volumes and deadlines.
  • Ability to prepare and make presentations regarding CSPC performance, and research findings at conferences and project meetings.
  • Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail.
Demonstrated interest and ability to learn and develop new skills.

  • Excellent proficiency with computer software including word processing and Excel.
  • Ability to use statistical software such as SAS or R, Nvivo or other analytic software is an asset.

DECISION MAKING:

  • Managing research priorities set by the CSPC Director and the project PIs.
  • Exploring and exploiting opportunities for grants and contracts.
  • Prioritizing tasks of research assistants, associates, and students. Assisting in trouble shooting and problem solving; suggesting directions that would result in timely and accurate completion of tasks.
