Job Summary

Reporting to the Principal Investigator, the incumbent will assist across the research program. The primary responsibilities will be related to a clinical trial of assessing a new home-based rehabilitation program for older adults who have sustained a hip fracture. The incumbent will be involved in the following activities: coordination of a clinical research project; assisting in protocol development and the writing of research grant applications; write and submit ethics applications; monitor project expenses; implement and monitor research projects; planning and carrying out data collection and analysis; carrying out physiotherapy assessment and management based on study protocols; leading physiotherapy treatment sessions with a physiotherapy assistant on a flexible schedule; help in screening potential study participants at Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) and/or Providence Care Hospital (PCH); communicate with research collaborators; assist with disseminating results (contribute to reports, publications and scientific presentations); coordination with partners; and supervising junior research staff.

Job Description

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

•Initiate and manage the Principal Investigators' research project(s), including independently addressing any issues about the studies.

•Apply proficient understanding of clinical research methodology, data collection and analysis, in order to contribute to the oversight and conduct of the Principal Investigator's projects.

•Develop, maintain and monitor a detailed project management timeline and task set; recommend and design research plans, and set priorities and project objectives.

•Support project staff, as applicable, in screening for inclusion, recruiting, and following up with patient participants.

•Ensure the research project runs in accordance with the research protocol, and keep track of the project according to the project timeline.

•Manage data and perform high quality statistical analysis; assess and interpret data and supporting documentation to ensure protocol compliance.

•Provide physiotherapy assessment and management based on study protocols. This will include performing comprehensive in-home physiotherapy assessment and management for people post discharge following a hip fracture. When providing these physiotherapy services, it is expected that all requirements of the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario will be met.

•Work independently within guidelines provided by the Principal Investigator.

•Develop and maintain study monitoring files.

•Ensure the research projects run in accordance with their protocols, and keep on track according to their project timelines.

•Maintain communication within the research team to support progress along the project management timeline.

•Participate in weekly research team meetings and prepare agendas, minutes, and other meeting materials.

•Coordinate, write and submit Research Ethics Board applications.

•Flexibility is required.

•Knowledge of data analysis and familiarity with REDCap are assets.

•Welling to learn new skills.

•Prepare project materials (e.g. Standard research operating procedures, data collection forms, consent forms, etc.), including designing, printing and/or photocopying, and distributing.

•Maintain communication with research sites and partners to support the smooth and effective data collection and analysis.

•Travel to participants' homes and local healthcare settings for research activities.

•Provide flexibility in the work schedule to meet the needs of patient participants' home visits.

•Recruit, consent, and assess research participants at KHSC and PCH.

•Perform data entry, check data quality, and maintain study databases. Analyze data and interpret results, including use of complex computer programs and statistical analyses.

•Plan, prioritize and supervise the work of physiotherapy assistants and volunteers.

•Assess staffing training and development needs, manage employee performance by establishing individual objectives and evaluating output; address and resolve employee relations concerns by adhering to the University's policies and procedures.

•Monitor and report on project budgets, as per funder/institution guidelines, and in coordination with the Research Grants and Financial Officer of the School of Rehabilitation Therapy.

•Undertake other duties as delegated to support the successful conduct of the research project.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

•Masters or PhD degree in health-related research field (e.g. epidemiology, biostatistics, or public health ) is an asset

•Registered Physiotherapist in good standing with the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario, and a minimum of three years' experience. Previous experience coordinating research projects is an asset.

•Familiarity with Ontario heath care system

•Experience in qualitative and/or quantitative data analysis is advantageous. Access to transportation and willingness to travel to local healthcare sites and patient participant homes for research activities.

•Consideration may be given to an equivalent combination of experience and education.

SPECIAL SKILLS:

•Effective independent decision-making and judgement abilities in addressing complex and sensitive issues regarding research plans and staffing needs.

•High-level organizational skills and attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy, including managing and prioritizing multiple competing tasks and deadlines.

•Excellent time management, problem-solving, and analytical skills.

•Strong technical/scientific writing skills, and strong verbal communication skills.

•Good personal judgment, be proactive in identifying and initiating activities that require attention.

•Excellent project management skills and ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

•Ability to use Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word.

•Ability to work collaboratively with a range of research stakeholders.

•Computer skills to aid in the research, analysis and presentation of data including word processing, and data analysis. Technical proficiency or ability to become proficient quickly in the use of multiple software programs.

•Self-directed, able to create and implement programs with minimal supervision and guidance.

•Proven ability to work independently and as a team member.

DECISION MAKING:

•Independently manage the day-to-day priorities in support of achieving overall project goals.

•Conduct weekly data monitoring based on participant inclusion/exclusion.

•Decide on best alternatives or a range of solutions to a given problem; identify potential risks and benefits of each.

•Answer questions regarding research projects, or redirect inquiries if necessary.

•Resolve problems as they arise and determine when to report these actions to the Principal Investigator.

•Make suggestions on data collection, presentation of results and coordination of activities.

•In consultation with the Principal Investigators, determine layout, content and formatting of documentation.

•Participate in screening and interviewing casual Work Study students or other casual candidates, and provide input into casual employee selection.

•Provide work direction, and technical/functional guidance to casual Work Study students or other casual employees. Schedule and assign work, and oversee its completion. Coordinate and monitor work flow.

•Provide orientation and on-the-job training to casual employees. Provide coaching and feedback on work quality issues, providing related day-to-day supervision. Escalate unresolved performance and/or disciplinary matters to the Principal Investigator.
