Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada Université de Sherbrooke Full time

The Université de Sherbrooke is seeking applications for a position as professor whose research program focuses in preclinical or translational research in neonatal or pediatrics critical care. This is a full-time tenure track position in the Pediatric Department of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.

About the Faculty

Basic, applied and clinical research are key strengths of our institution. The Université de Sherbrooke Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences enjoys a first-class reputation thanks to its educational innovations, its constant adaptation to society's changing needs and to the success of its world-class research teams. It stands out among the international elite as the only faculty in Canada and the only Francophone faculty in the world to be designated a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre on Health Science Education and Practice.

About the Department

The Pediatrics Department has 74 professors, including 10 recognized research teams led by clinical investigators or fundamental researchers.

Members of the department teach in the MD program and the graduate programs in Immunology, Physiology, Health Sciences, Radiation/Imaging Sciences and Biochemistry. The ongoing construction of the new mother-child care centre will soon provide the ideal conditions for the transfer of knowledge in areas ranging from preclinical research to pediatric patients.

Profile desired

We are seeking exceptional candidates with a PhD degree with postdoctoral expertise in preclinical or translational research applied to critical care in neonatology or pediatric, with experience in preclinical large animals models. This preclinical research training should be applicable to critical care in the areas of respiratory or cardiovascular, neuroinflammation or neurodevelopment; it can also be in the field of critical care in the broad sense, including the development of biomedical technologies.

The Department of Pediatrics is especially eager to bridge the gap between research in neonatal respiratory pathologies – which represents a 40-year-old tradition in our institution – and research centers in critical care, neuroscience, imaging and physiology. The availability of models on large animals (sheep and pigs) is a major asset allowing in the development of a research theme that faithfully reproduces the care offered to newborns and children in the context of intensive care. The candidate will have to develop his own research program, but will also have to establish rich collaborations with researchers in basic and clinical sciences, in a unique environment allowing him to stand out from the researchers of other institutions in Quebec and Canada.

The research program should be structured around critical care in neonatology or paediatrics, as well as to the long-term consequences resulting therefrom.

The successful candidate must establish and maintain an independent, externally funded research program and obtain salary support from external sources (e.g. FRQS). The successful candidate must collaborate actively with researchers in the Department of Pediatrics, especially with the ovine research team. The candidate is also expected to collaborate with researchers from the Université de Sherbrooke Centre of Excellence for Maternal-Child Research and with members of the Université de Sherbrooke Centre of Excellence for Neurosciences. Collaborations may also be developed with researchers from the Department of Immunology and Cell Biology and the Sherbrooke Molecular Imaging Centre. These internationally recognized groups constitute ideal settings for the development of an active and innovative research program and strong leadership on the national and international stages. All Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences researchers have access to state-of-the-art scientific equipment and to an interdisciplinary research environment

The successful candidate must have experience in teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels. Knowledge of French, or a commitment to learn the language in the short term, is essential.

Main duties

  • Teach at undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Develop an independent research program structured around critical care in neonatology and/or paediatric.
  • Supervise graduate and doctoral students.
  • Participate in university life.
  • Contribute to community service.

Qualifications

  • Hold a PhD degree with postdoctoral expertise in preclinical research on large animals applied to critical care in neonatology or pediatrics.
  • Have a marked interest in university pedagogy and teaching as well as for research, development, and innovation.
  • Have a marked interest in research (disciplinary, interdisciplinary) and in the transfer of knowledge and innovation.
  • Demonstrate good ability to supervise graduate students.
  • Have a publication record in peer-reviewed journals of international standing, testifying to an excellent research record.
  • Demonstrate skills in establishing and maintaining good interpersonal relations, a sense of collaboration, and teamwork skills.
  • Demonstrate qualities of leadership and initiative as well as outstanding skills in communicating and effectively and harmoniously interacting with various internal and external partners.
