JOB SUMMARY:


The Stormwater Management & Environmental Monitoring unit is responsible for environmental monitoring and assessment programs that are integral to watershed planning, and the evaluation of the city's surface water management infrastructure, policies and practices; investigation of water environment impacts; and ongoing review and update of standards for environmental monitoring and assessment and surface water management.


You assist with the collection of water quality or other environmental samples, and the installation and operation of monitoring equipment, using established criteria and protocols.

Sites include storm and sanitary sewers, industrial dischargers, waste haulers, and storm water management facilities. These positions involve both outdoor work and indoor activities related to the various monitoring programs.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Post-secondary Student - completion of second year college or university in an Environmental Science or Civil/Environmental Engineering program

Minimum of 4 months but less than 8 months of related experience is required

Previous experience with water quality sampling, environmental management, regulatory compliance, storm water management concepts, preparation of field inspection reports, data analysis and review is desired but not essential

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES:

Valid Ontario unrestricted G class driver's licence (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of techniques for the collection of environmental samples and conducting inspections; general field safety practices; and environmental impacts related to stormwater, wastewater and industrial discharges.

  • Able to perform physical labour tasks in the performance of the duties; such as opening manholes, traversing embankments and the loading/unloading of equipment.
  • Ability to operate a small vehicle (car/van/pickup) in the performance of the duties.
  • Must supply own safety footwear (Green-Patch safety boots).
