Term length - May 1, April 30, 2024.

Hours of works will vary. Approximately 35 hours per week from May - August 31. Approximately 20 hours a week during Academic Year (September - April). Will include some evening and weekend work.

Location - Work primarily takes place at North Campus Edmonton. This role is in-person.

Position Summary


Supervised by the Coordinator, Residence Transition & Academic Initiatives; the Orientation & Education Intern is a member of the Community Education and Leadership (CEAL) Portfolio, and works to support their initiatives that foster student development and success through training, orientation and leadership programs.


During the summer, this role primarily supports all Residence Orientation programming, including the BaseCamp stream for first-year students and theAscent stream for upper-year and graduate students.

They will also work to support aspects of Residence Student Staff Fall Training as needed.


During the Fall and Winter Semesters the position focuses on planning Winter Orientation for students moving into residence mid-year, supporting the coordination of mid-year Student Staff training, developing additional leadership opportunities as needed, supporting various research projects and developing initial plans for Fall 2024 Residence Orientation Programs.


This position is designed as an advanced student leadership opportunity for those interested in gaining experiences in the Residence Life and Student Affairs field.

In this capacity, the intern will develop skills in the areas of program development, facilitation and assessment.

The position will also work as part of the Residence Life Team in providing direction to the Residence Life program at the University of Alberta.


Duties

  • Support all aspects of the planning and implementing of Residence Orientation), both in August and January for incoming residents, which will include:
  • Develop orientation schedules and oversee their distribution
  • Collaborate with various departments to ensure appropriate communication to students and parents about BaseCamp and Eastern Ascent.
  • Communication and meet regularly with various representatives of the university to coordinate and develop components of BaseCamp and Eastern Ascent.
  • Train and oversee orientation volunteers and residence staff (for example, Resident Assistants, Senior Resident Assistants, Cohort Leaders and Professional Residence Life Staff) on their role in implementing residence orientation.
  • Develop and implement an assessment plan for BaseCamp and Eastern Ascent with the support of their supervisor, and communicate the success and future direction of residence orientation to key stakeholders in residence and on campus in the form of a report and presentation
  • Support the updating and maintenance of the orientation webpages
  • Ongoing development and maintenance of Expedition:Connect and Virtual Residence Life Platforms.
  • Expedition:Connect is an online eclass course available to all students in residence, and provides orientation and support content for students to access throughout the year on topics such as residence and campus involvement, academic success, career success, substance use, etc. Content is designed for both firstyear and upperyear audiences.
  • Assist with moderating online discussion boards
  • Assist with the revision of online module content, and the development of new content as needed
  • Promoting the platform to residents, encouraging student enrolment for these platforms throughout the year, and promoting the platform's modules at key points throughout the year as they relate to the student life cycle
  • Develop and support ongoing training opportunities for residence student staff, which includes:
  • Using training surveys and assessments to identify areas where remedial training is needed throughout the year
  • Supporting the coordination of the two midyear, conferencestyle training days for Student Staff (Fall Summit at the end of September and Winter Summit at the beginning of January). This includes developing schedules, coordinating presenters, planning logistics, such as training venue and catering, and communicating with residence staff and their supervisors.
