C-Dem is a SSHRC-funded research project co-led by Professor Laura Stephenson in the Department of Political Science.C-Dem is a dynamic research network across Canada that addresses urgent questions about political engagement, underrepresentation, levels of government, the evolution of public opinion between and across elections, and data collection practices with an evidence-based, cooperative approach to studying electoral democracy, during federal and subnational elections and between elections.
C-Dem is responsible for the collection of the Canadian Election Study, as well as provincial election studies and yearly surveys of Canadian attitudes (Democracy Checkups).
In addition to this extensive data collection, research dissemination, knowledge mobilization and outreach are substantial components of the project.Responsibilities:
The Research Associate will support the programming, execution and public dissemination of research surveys, research progress and results for the C-Dem Research Team, contributing to the goals and success of the research project.
This includes responsibility for conducting data collection, using advanced statistical analysis and assessment of research data, and coordinating data collection for multiple survey efforts which will include preparing survey content and maintaining quality control of data and instruments, liaising with survey firms for distribution, cleaning data and preparing codebooks for public release.
The Research Associate will also manage databases, support knowledge translation and dissemination for reports and manuscripts.Qualifications:
- Education:
- Master's degree in a relevant field
- Master's degree in a related academic research environment (Political Science, Sociology, Psychology) is preferred
- Experience:
- 2 years' experience in an academic/research environment
- Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Familiarity with techniques for updating, managing and extracting data from a research database
- Familiarity with regulations and guidelines governing research ethics in an academic environment
- Excellent communication skills with a demonstrated ability to complete detailed analytics and reports
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and confidence dealing with all levels of an organization
- Ability to process information with high levels of accuracy
- Ability to analyze and synthesize sizable amounts of detail/data
- Selfdriven, independent thinker who is highly motivated and possesses an intrinsic passion for quality
- Advanced research software skills including survey design, data processing and analysis, and database management
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and take initiative and follow through on work assignments
- Proven ability to multitask and prioritize with an eye to consistently producing highquality work and meeting deadlines in a demanding environment
- Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to manage activities both for self and others effectively
- Judgment, analytical and problemsolving skills with a consultative and collaborative approach to addressing issues and opportunities
