Permanent full-time: 10 Month position

Salary Range:
$74,084

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • To assist students in addressing circumstances, which adversely affect their ability to participate in educational programs
  • Provide therapeutic services to students experiencing social, emotional, and behavioral problems in the context of the family, the school, and the community with the goal of having them improve attendance and engagement at school
  • Enforce school attendance through proactive strategies, targeted supports, and interventions up to, and including, legal action according to the Education Act when required
  • Collaborate with teachers and school administrators to proactively address concerns related to school attendance and identify strategies to support student needs in the classroom and school environment
  • Participate in collaborative planning meetings with staff and community partners to facilitate appropriate referrals that will meet student identified needs
  • Provide case management for students with severe attendance concerns or those who are enrolled in the Long-Term Suspension and Expulsion/Exclusion program
  • Provide crisis intervention and trauma response
  • Empower students and their families to access and effectively use community resources and provide support with system navigation and coordination of services
  • Provide clear, concise, and accurate documentation, protecting privacy and confidentiality, as per the standards and regulations established by the staff members' Regulatory College, and adhering to the associated policies and procedures of BWDSB
  • Work as an effective member of a multidisciplinary team as well as work independently
  • Abide by all legal requirements associated with scope of practice
  • Visit school and/or family homes to assess cases, negotiate intervention strategies and deliver services
  • Provide therapeutic services for the longterm suspension and expulsion/exclusion program (LTSE) that include evidencebased practices such as CBT, DBT, Solution-Focused, ACT, and Motivational Interviewing
  • Create and provide professional development to a wide range of audiences, such as students, staff, and other stakeholders
  • Remain current on relevant research, best practices, legislation, and professional literature
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Masters degree in Social Work, Psychology or Psychotherapy/Counselling
  • Eligibility or a member of the Ontario Association for Counselling and Attendance Services

  • Excellent interpersonal skills that will help to build strong relationships with students, families, educators, and community service partners
  • Experience and expertise in delivering and creating psychoeducation and programming for a wide range of audiences, such as students, staff, and other stakeholders
  • Ability to complete risk assessment and experience in safety planning, crisis intervention, and trauma response
  • Effective implementation of policies and procedures with a commitment to advocate for change where needed
  • Strong assessment skills in identifying the biopsychosocial needs of students with expertise in creating, implementing, and evaluating collaborative and holistic treatment plans
  • Expertise in providing comprehensive consultation
  • Ability to interpret and collect data to inform the implementation and evaluation of programs and services
  • Willingness to learn new concepts and integrate into practice
  • Comprehensive understanding of resources and materials provided by School Mental Health Ontario (SMH-ON) and Ontario Association for Attendance Counselling Services
  • Expertise in system navigation and coordination of services
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Professional experience in an educational setting
  • Demonstrate skills in innovation and creativity
  • Excellent problemsolver and leader who possesses initiative
