Reporting to the OFI Scientific Director & CEO, the Chief Ocean Data Officer will be responsible for leading and overseeing the execution of a data strategy for ocean research, including data management, data science, and data sharing. They will be responsible for establishing, managing and coordinating the distributed staff of the Data Transformation Accelerator of the Transforming Climate Action (TCA) research and training program, across multiple partners, and for liaising with associated programs including providing strategic advice.
Key Responsibilities
  • Create strategy to identify how data collected across the TCA research initiatives can create more value to TCA and to external partners/stakeholders, and how it can best reach and benefit Canadian individuals, decision-makers, and organizations; including strategy to incorporate commercial, partner, and internal data into a data registry to create value internally and externally.
  • Build and lead a team that can create value from ocean data, including locating, managing and connecting data across multiple TCA projects, including innovation and commercialization initiatives, the Canadian Integrated Ocean Observation System (CIOOS), and other OFI-led initiatives.
  • Provide data leadership through provision of strategic advice beyond TCA as it pertains to the technical side of data management and associated programs at the partner institutions, including OFI, CIOOS, DeepSense, SLGO, and related initiatives.
  • Provide strategic technical advice to data management and technical teams.
  • Identify potential strategic, long-term opportunities and directions for OFI, TCA, and associated initiatives.
  • Working closely with the scientific and organizational leadership teams, support domestic and international partnership building as it relates to realization of established objectives, both existing and new, public and private sectors; and act as an influencer/advocate/thought leader for policy-related aspects affecting this space.
Note

The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.

Infrequent travel within Eastern Canada and possibly internationally may be required..

Evening and weekend work may be required on an occasional basis to meet operational requirements.
Required Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree in information management, computer science, business management, engineering, ocean science or related field with a minimum of 10 years of experience developing and implementing data management strategy and value creation through data.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the technical and non-technical dimensions of managing data.
  • Demonstrated connection and expertise to the research at the core of TCA (ocean- climate-people).
  • Proven record of delivering successful solutions through collaborative efforts involving many participants with diverse needs.
Assets
  • Masters' degree in information management, computer science, business management, engineering, ocean science or in a related field.
  • Bilingualism in English & French. Fluent in one and will be encouraged and supported in developing limited working proficiency in the other.
