Duties:


The Associate Dean works in collaboration with the Dean and as part of an operational team to oversee the daily, monthly, and annual functions of the Faculty of Trades and Applied Technology (TAT).


The Associate Dean will also be responsible for working with and supporting programs within the Faculty, assisting with budget planning and implementation, supporting and/or leading faculty committees, managing functions that facilitate student success, and supporting the development and implementation of new initiatives.

As such, the Associate Dean must have extensive knowledge of the current TAT programs, an understanding of university governance, experience working within a unionized environment, and experience working with people through challenging situations.


Under the direction of the Dean, the Associate Dean will be responsible for tasks and areas identified by the Dean, including academic planning and implementation, budget development and monitoring (in collaboration with the Dean), and organization and management functions that facilitate successful working relationships between faculty, staff, students, communities, and university administration.

The Associate Dean also assists the Dean and Program Chairs to develop and implement new initiatives, including cost-recovery programming.


The Associate Dean will foster student and program success by collaborating and liaising with other institutional areas including: the Office of Indigenous Education and Engagement; Registration and Admissions; Student Affairs; Recruitment and Advising; International Education; the Office of University Analysis and Planning; Facilities; and other institutional areas.

The focus of this collaboration is to improve processes and information flow, to manage student concerns and appeals, and to initiate new strategies for improved student engagement.


The Associate Dean's key responsibilities include:

  • Oversee daily operations in the various program areas, in collaboration with the Chairs, including student support and faculty workload and timetabling;
  • Work with the Dean, faculty, and staff to establish and implement strategic plans and communicate institutional directives and organizational changes;
  • Provide oversight on academic program quality and delivery, in collaboration with the Dean;
  • Work with program chairs and faculty to support the work of TATA Curriculum Teaching Learning Specialist.
  • Support applied research and scholarship opportunities that enrich faculty experience and enhance student outcomes working closely with SRCA.
  • Promote the increase of solving real world challenges with industry partners while enhancing the student experience.
  • Support the Dean in completing Summative Program Assessment and Program Review;
  • Participate on Faculty and University committees as assigned, particularly those focused on academic programs and student success;
  • Provide support and input to the Dean on budget development, monitoring and expenditure control, as needed;
  • Undertake institutionalwide initiatives as developed by the Provost, in consultation with the Dean;
  • Manage student and faculty issues/concerns in collaboration with the Dean's Office;
  • Chair Faculty search committees as needed;
  • Represent the Dean, and Faculty, as required;
  • Initiate new strategies for student engagement;
  • Identify new program needs, including cost recovery programs, and opportunities to work with faculty and the Dean to revise existing programs;
  • Assume responsibilities as Acting Dean in the Dean's absence, including attending Provost Council and President Council meetings, and attending other meetings as required;
  • Work with other faculties and departments to streamline and avoid duplication of professional development and training opportunities;
  • Take on special decanal tasks and projects as assigned by the Dean.

Required Qualifications:


Master's Degree from an appropriately accredited institution, completed (or in progress) and suitable combination of training, education, teaching and five to ten years directly related work experience.

Experience in post-secondary education and experience working in a unionized environment is essential.
