Summary:


Performs installations, inspections, repairs, maintenance and construction work on municipal buildings, grounds, equipment, and facilities, including the inspection and testing of back flow devices.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs skilled duties in the Plumber / Gas Fitter field, including:
  • Installing and repairing inside water and sewer lines to current plumbing / gas codes.
  • Servicing and replacing gas heating equipment, including gas hot water tanks and stoves that do not exceed 400,000 BTU units.
  • Installing, repairing, and inspecting cross connection control devices in municipally owned buildings and facilities.
  • Working from drawings and specifications.
  • Responding to, diagnosing, and resolving urgent plumbing issues.
  • Providing new construction upgrades as well as cost estimates.
  • Maintaining and repairing of all components of irrigation systems, which includes the point of connection, piping systems, controls, and sprinkler heads.
  • Carries out minor repairs and maintenance of equipment and tools.
  • Assists in directing outside contractors involved in completing City maintenance projects.
  • Ensures equipment is safe to operate, securely stored and practice good housekeeping of vehicle and work area.
  • Provides excellent customer service; respond to needs of all customers and staff as required.
  • Efficiently and accurately completes paperwork (e.g., daily performance logs, materials consumed and preparation of cost and time estimates).
  • Works in accordance with the provisions of applicable Health and Safety legislation and all City of St. Catharines corporate and departmental policies and procedures related to the core responsibilities of the job.
  • Performs other similar and related duties as required.

Position Requirements:

  • Grade 12 Diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate.
  • Red Seal licensed Plumber with three (3) years of experience, preferably in a municipal government setting.
  • Gas Fitter License G2 required; G1 preferred, and/or willingness to obtain.
  • Must be willing to be licensed by the City of St. Catharines as a Master Plumber.
  • Certification as a Backflow Prevention Specialist or willingness to attend training and ability to achieve certification.


Valid
  • Standard First Aid / CPR C Certification as recognized through the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB).
  • Valid, unrestricted Class "G" driver's license held in good standing. "DZ" license preferred.
  • Formal training and experience with the Occupational Health and Safety Act as it relates to maintenance and construction activities (e.g., Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), fall arrest, working at heights, trench safety, and confined space entry).
  • A demonstrated commitment to enhancing a safety culture. Knowledge of City of St. Catharines safety policies preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Ontario Traffic Manual with emphasis on Book 7 preferred. Ability to safely set up traffic control in work zones during roadway or utility construction and maintenance operations.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the job as described in the physical demands analysis (PDA).
  • Availability to work flexible hours (e.g., working shifts for a 7day, 24hour operation, and overtime).
  • Effective time management skills and attention to detail with the ability to organize work to meet deadlines, multitask, and work independently in situations with mínimal supervision.
  • Ability to direct and organize other workers while working under limited supervision.
  • Exceptional customer service skills with a strong sense of public service and cooperation, and welldeveloped abilities to deal with the public and citizens' groups.
  • Basic computer skills, with experience using Microsoft Office Suite an asset.

$35.51
