The Edmonton Police Service has an opportunity for a motivated Chief Pilot able to work as a resource to existing Edmonton Police Service Flight Operations Unit pilots and flight crew. The Chief Pilot is a senior management role within the Flight Operations Unit (FOU), primarily responsible for the strategic planning and management of all flight operations. This position encompasses the leadership and oversight of daily flight operations, ensuring adherence to Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARS), the Unit's Standard Operating Procedures, and Aircraft Flight Manual standards. The Chief Pilot holds significant authority in the hiring, performance evaluation, and disciplinary actions of pilots and flight crew, reinforcing high safety standards and operational consistency across the unit. Additionally, the role involves critical decision-making on risk management, service quality, and operational effectiveness, establishing the Chief Pilot as a key managerial figure within organizational hierarchy. The responsibilities of this position will include:

  • Managing and evaluating the performance of all pilots includes conducting flight reviews and providing ongoing feedback and coaching in relation to safe operating practices.
  • This role involves strategic decision-making regarding personnel management, training programs and the enforcement of operational compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Ensuring that flights are conducted in accordance with the Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARS) and Unit Policy.
  • Supervision of helicopter and fixed-wing pilots as it relates to aviation, and direct supervision of up to two (2) Aviation Maintenance Engineers.
  • The Chief Pilot is responsible for the comprehensive management of aircraft maintenance, overseeing maintenance schedules, and ensuring all aircraft meet safety and operational standards before re-entry into service.
  • This role must collaborate with the Unit Supervisor and the S/Sgt to align with the flight operations' strategic goals and thus directly influencing the organizational direction.
  • This role ensures that appropriate records are kept with regards to flights and maintenance of the aircraft and ensures that all quotations and invoices are accurate and processed in a timely manner.
  • The Chief Pilot leads the research and acquisition of new aircraft, equipment, and technologies in alignment with the strategic plan for the unit as well as other initiatives.
  • The Chief Pilot designs and oversees the execution of advanced training programs, ensuring all pilots meet or exceed key objectives and can conduct check flights to ensure safety standards are being upheld.
  • Other related duties as required.
Qualifications

Qualifications :

  • Grade 12 diploma required. Post-secondary education in a related field an asset.
  • Minimum 3000 helicopter flying hours as Pilot in Command (PIC) is an asset.
  • Minimum 300-night flying hours, as the PIC, would be an asset.
  • Night Vision Goggle experience and currency and asset.
  • Fixed Wing pilot or operational coordinator/Chief Pilot experience is an asset.
  • Remote Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS/UAS) certification and experience is an asset.
  • Valid, current Canadian Commercial Helicopter License (CPL-H) and valid Commercial Fixed Wing License (CPL-A) an asset. (Both licenses would be desirable)
  • Group 3 or 4 Instrument Rating an asset
  • Valid, current Canadian Helicopter Night Rating and Canadian Category 1 Medical Certificate
  • AS350 or H125 type endorsement an asset
  • Class 3 Instructor Rating or experience as a training pilot an asset
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver's License
  • Candidates must be 3 years free of any aviation or other regulatory incident or investigation that may affect the safety of the Unit or the reputation of the EPS.
  • Proven leadership abilities, including experience in strategic planning, personnel management and effective communication skills are essential.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to work occasional shift work and on weekends.
  • Applicants may be tested.
  • As part of your pre-hire screening, you will be required to complete an Enhanced Security Clearance. Should you accept employment with the Edmonton Police Service you acknowledge and agree to participate in future Enhanced Security Re-Clearances at scheduled intervals or in any other circumstances, exigent or otherwise, as required by Human Resources Division.

Hours of Work: 36.9 hours per week. Hours of work may be subject to the terms and conditions of a variable hours of work program.

Salary Range: A competitive package comparable to industry standards is available based on qualifications and experience.
