Organic Chemistry Scientist (Student)


West Fraser's Research and Development Center (RDC) is looking for a scientist to work on biopolymers (lignin) for wood adhesives.

The goal is to replace petroleum-based thermoset adhesives by more environmentally friendly alternatives, aimed at reducing West Fraser's carbon footprint.

The project will be centered on construction panel manufacture.

The applicant will need to have a good chemical understanding and show an eagerness to review the latest literature, suggest potential approaches and perform lab testing.


Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Literature review (patents, articles).
  • Understand lignin chemical structure and reactive sites
  • Elaborate experimental plan to solubilize and/or activate lignin reaction sites
  • Conduct lab experiments
  • Conduct adhesive testing and performance evaluation.
  • Write reports

Availability:
Summer 2023

Duration: 4-month term, possibility of extension

Scientifique en chimie organique (étudiant)

  • Revue de littérature (brevets, articles).
  • Comprendre la structure chimique de la lignine et les sites réactifs
- Élaborer un plan expérimental pour solubiliser et/ou activer les sites de réaction de la lignine

  • Mener des expériences en laboratoire
  • Participer aux tests d'adhésifs et à l'évaluation de la performance des panneaux.
  • Rédiger des rapports
