ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

CHBA's national office is seeking a dynamic individual to provide technical support to CHBA's committees and councils on GHG emissions reductions and climate change resilience. Reporting to the Director, Building Science, this Technical Advisor position will provide advisory services on guides, codes, standards, and regulations as they relate to residential construction, and will play a key role in integrating GHG emissions reductions and resilient building practices into CHBA's Net Zero Home Labelling Program. Key activities will involve coordinating, analyzing, and communicating emissions and resilience related subjects, including collaborating with provincial and local home builder association (HBA) offices across Canada, and closely collaborating with CHBA's Net Zero Team in the delivery of related initiatives. Key Responsibilities

Liaise with CHBA committees, key government agencies and officials, and strategic partners regarding technical issues and opportunities related to emissions and resilience by:

  • Linking CHBA's technical team with the Net Zero, Modular Construction, and Government Relations teams to develop and communicate CHBA policies and advocacy positions pertaining to technical matters.
  • Liaising with CHBA members, HBAs, industry partners, other associations, governments, consultants, and other organizations in the residential sector to obtain and provide information and respond to technical inquiries as required.

Provide technical advice on codes and standards as they relate to emissions and resilience to the Technical Research Committee, Modular Construction Council, Net Zero Council, and Canadian Renovators' Council by:

  • Monitoring proposed and adopted changes to emissions and resilience related standards and regulations that affect the residential construction industry.
  • Communicating with governments and association members regarding industry positions, current practices, issues and opportunities; and preparing comments on proposed changes as well as developing requests for code changes as required.
  • Participating on technical committees or groups that develop guides, codes or standards that deal with GHG emissions and climate change resilience at the national level.
  • Supporting technical aspects of the CHBA Net Zero Home Labelling Program.

Support the design and delivery of programs to support innovation in the industry by:

  • Monitoring emerging industry practices, R&D activities of interest to members, and regulatory barriers in the areas of GHG emissions reductions and climate resilient buildings.
  • Identifying sources of information with respect to potential innovative solutions and providing guidance to enable members to benefit from such information.
  • Identifying research to develop cost-effective solutions.
  • Supporting the development of information for education and training activities.

Provide programmatic and logistical support to relevant committees and councils by:

  • Providing logistical support for meetings of CHBA councils and committees (agenda, meeting summaries and status updates) and working with directors and chairs to administer meetings.
  • Providing regular updates (e.g. presentations, seminars, web content, bulletins, and magazine articles) on related activities, opportunities, and issues.
  • Coordinating information sharing among CHBA and other organizations, including program updates for education/training courses.
  • Reporting on the status of regulatory activities, opportunities, and issues.

ABOUT YOU, THE CANDIDATE

Education

Post-secondary education in architecture, engineering or residential construction technology or a related field.

Experience

  • Experience in GHG emissions reductions and climate resilience efforts in the residential construction industry.
  • Experience participating in the development of technical documents, such as guides, codes, and standards.
  • Experience in the residential construction sector.
  • Experience communicating technical information to a broad audience.
  • Asset: Experience providing programmatic and/or logistical support to a committee or council.

Note: Assets throughout this document are not an essential qualification for the role but would be beneficial if the candidate has them.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Knowledge

  • Fundamental knowledge of building science principles.
  • In-depth knowledge of energy efficiency, climate change mitigation and adaptation, as pertaining to residential construction.
  • Knowledge of the national codes and standards development system.
  • Current knowledge of technical challenges in the residential construction and renovation sector including proposed and recently adopted changes to codes and standards.
  • Asset: Knowledge of association/not-for-profit management and governance best practices.
  • Asset: Knowledge of HOT2000, 'carbon' calculators or other modeling tools.
  • Asset: Knowledge of residential voluntary energy labelling programs.

Skills and Abilities

  • Competency with Microsoft Office including MS Teams, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of stakeholders at various levels within different organizations.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop strong working relationships that encourage cooperation.
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task, advancing multiple projects and activities simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated strong writing and presentation skills for a variety of audiences.
  • Asset: Bilingual in English and French.

Hours of work

The hours of work are from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday, though some flexibility is available. CHBA also has a hybrid work policy, with a combination of work-from-the-office and work-from-home days. There may be a requirement to travel within Canada to attend meetings. The incumbent may be asked to work overtime as required.
