Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting applications for the permanent position of Lead Hand- Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) with Emergency Fire Fleet.

The Lead Hand Mechanic is responsible for supervision of mechanical personnel to ensure the efficient and effective daily operations of the Emergency Fleet (Fire) Garage. The Lead hand is also responsible for development and leadership of the mechanics within the Emergency Fleet. The Lead Hand will assist with overseeing all mechanical repairs, preventive maintenance, outsourcing, purchasing, administrative and asset management related to fire vehicles and equipment. The incumbent will work with members of the Fire Service and Emergency Fleet for the schedule of work and allocation of equipment.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Education & Experience: Certified Master Fire Emergency Vehicle Technician, preferred. Fire EVT Level 1 or Level 2 may also be considered. Four years' experience working with emergency vehicles will be an asset. Must have Three years' experience as a Supervisor, Lead Hand or Shop Foreman or Master EVT certified with 4 years mechanical experience working in an Emergency Fleet operation. Must have a minimum 5 years' experience as a licensed Red Seal Truck & Transport mechanic. Must have and maintain Class 3 (or equivalent) Driver's License with air brake endorsement. Applicants who are certified Truck & Transport Mechanic with Three years Supervisory experience may apply, with the successful candidate required to attain a level 2 certification in the Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) program within the first year of probationary period and must attain the Master EVT Certification within the following two (2) years. The Master EVT certification must be maintained while employed in this position. Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities: Working knowledge of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standards, diesel engines, Allison transmissions, auxiliary braking systems, hydraulics, and aerial components Thorough working knowledge of fire pumps and related systems Knowledge and understanding of MSDS, adhering to Policies, and Procurement Processes Ability to work in a computerized environment (competent with Outlook, Basic Excel and Fleet Management software programs) Security Clearance Requirements: Applicants may be required to complete an employment security screening check.
Please note – Testing may be conducted as a component of the selection process to assess technical and job specific knowledge. Candidates who are selected for testing, may be tested in a group setting, scheduled at the employer's discretion.

WORK STATUS: Permanent, Full-time
HOURS OF WORK: Monday - Thursday, 3:30pm - 2:00am, 40 hours/week
SALARY: $123,274.47 as per the IAFF Collective Agreement: A shift differential of $2.00 per hour will apply for shifts commencing between 3:30 pm and midnight.
