Who we need

(Please note this is a 12-month contract, remote working role and the individual must reside in Alberta.)


Reporting to the Director, Health Policy and Systems (AB), your focus will be on advocacy and government relations activities to support our mission initiatives in Alberta and the Northwest Territories.

In addition, to support our Mission priorities, you will:

  • Actively engage with people with lived experience (PWLE)
  • Build stakeholder engagement with partner organizations and the research community
  • Support Indigenous health and Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) initiatives
  • Coordinate events and meetings, track and manage data

How you will make an impact every day
Strategic development of advocacy campaigns and plans.

  • 2023 is a provincial election year and your focus will be on developing and planning campaigns around the election
  • Participate in the development of provincial tobacco coalition advocacy priorities.
  • Support H&S policy efforts as appropriate, including participation in municipal, provincial, and federal government advocacy meetings to advance H&S mission priorities.


Engage with internally with the Mission team and externally with community health professional stakeholders to advance health systems priority areas within the province.


  • Participate in meaningful local collaboratives and meetings aligned with H&S priority areas including but not limited to heart failure, cardiac/stroke rehab, prevention, and community support programs.
  • Identify local community needs related to H&S goals and priorities.
  • Maintain yearround connect and relationships with key stakeholder partners.
Build and strengthen provincial engagement of People with Lived Experience (PWLE) and caregivers.

  • Explore and implement strategies that provide meaningful experiences for PWLE and caregivers.
  • Engage with PWLE in local and national opportunities and maintain yearround meaningful connection.
  • Grow AB presence in online peer support communities, Community Connect enewsletter and virtual initiatives (Living with Stroke, webinars, etc.).
  • Participate in internal working groups related to PWLE engagement.
  • Recommend respectful, sustained opportunities to engage PWLE in publicfacing advocacy efforts.
  • Support the promotion of Heart Smart Kids within the framework of national priorities
Support and engage vulnerable populations, particularly Indigenous individuals and engage with national EDI work.

  • Develop and optimize framework for engaging with Indigenous populations in Alberta.
  • Participate in national EDI Working groups and identify opportunities to elevate work within Alberta/NWT and identify opportunities to enact EDI policies and practices

What you bring

Education
College Diploma or Undergraduate Degree in a health-related field (Masters in Public Health or political science preferred).

Work Experience

  • 12 years of experience in a health policy/promotion related field, or health care context.
  • Proven experience working with PWLE or community setting experience.
  • Knowledge of health promotion best practices, and experience in community engagement, community development, capacity building and chronic disease prevention.
  • Experience providing administrative support, data management.
  • Comfortable giving public presentations.
  • Experience in volunteer and/or event management/planning

Skills

  • Working knowledge of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular health and disease conditions and health promotion.
  • Working knowledge of health systems and the impact of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
  • Excellent communication skills and comfort with public speaking.
  • A high degree of independence, creativity, initiative, and accountability.
  • Ability to lead/engage small and large groups to support Mission initiatives/activities.
  • Strong computer skills and comfort working in a virtual environment.
