NOTE:

  • This posting represents a parttime, seasonal position for the fall and winter semesters, working Monday to Thursday, from 1 pm to 9 pm. for 28 hours per week, with a start date of August 21, 2023. This position is based on the Loyola campus._

SCOPE

Under the general direction of the Head, Vanier Library, and under the supervision of the Public Services Supervisor, the incumbent performs tasks of a complex nature associated with collection development, reference, (in person and online), and library instruction, with functional guidance from the Librarians; performs other duties which may be assigned.


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide assistance to users according to established procedures.
  • Assist with preparation of orientations and instruction programs, as assigned.
  • Assist with preparation of collection awareness displays in public areas, as assigned.
  • Encourage users to abide by the Libraries Code of Conduct; report problems to Concordia Security as needed.
  • Provide assistance to Librarians with collection development activities.
  • Perform bibliographic checking; performs bibliographic searching of online library catalogues, specialized collections, electronic and print catalogues of publishers and vendors when requested by Librarians.
  • Compile information related to new subscriptions, print or electronic, as instructed by Librarians (e.g. prices, licenses, restrictions, indexing, availability in local libraries, availability in databases we subscribe to, availability via different vendors or platforms).
  • Assist Librarians in carrying out tasks related to special projects (e.g. preparation of bibliographies, comparison of collections, surveys and reports).
  • Assist with the maintenance of the Reference collection according to established procedures; and assist library users on the use of equipment.
  • Clear, sort and shelve materials in the Reference collection.
  • Assist in keeping the Reference collection uptodate, including filing updates for updating looseleaf and other services.
  • Provide basic instruction to endusers on the use of equipment.
  • Assist with the maintenance of equipment; report problems with computer workstations and printers.
  • Perform clerical tasks associated with Information Services according to established procedures.
  • Assist with secretarial duties; assist with maintenance of office photocopier and printers; assist with distribution of departmental mail.
  • Record relevant statistics.
  • Participates in Library and/or University committee work, as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Diploma of Collegial Studies (threeyear technical DEC) in Documentation Technology.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills are essential; this must include evidence of aptitude for and interest in serviceoriented work; evidence of ability to handle queries and complaints with courtesy, tact and good judgement.
  • Evidence of ability to interpret policies and to solve problems with flexibility and good judgment.
  • Evidence of ability to organize work, establish priorities, and to perform clerical duties with special attention to accuracy, details and deadlines; the ability to work with a minimum of supervision is essential.
  • Good knowledge (Level 4) of spoken and written English; basic knowledge (Level 3) of spoken French.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with supervisors and other staff members is required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Outlook and Windows and of managing files in a Windows environment is required.
  • Basic Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel is required; knowledge of PowerPoint is an asset; intermediate level of Internet navigation skills is required.
  • Ability to learn new procedures and technologies, and adapt to changing technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to locate and interpret bibliographic records and documents on a variety of online platforms is required.
  • Physical stamina required to shelve Reference materials.
  • Have physical ability to lift/carry/move without assistance up to 4.5 kg (10 lbs.) and to push a book truck weighing up to 300lbs.
