SUMMARY
The Optical Design Technical Specialist (Engineering) works under mínimal supervision.

Level of work at which the incumbent is expected to undertake the design and development of highly complex products and (or) test equipment.

Possesses advanced technical knowledge in one or more related specialized activities. Performs the following tasks under very limited control and monitoring. Generally reports directly to the Engineering Manager and may be given full responsibility for conducting smaller development projects.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work with project management, electrical, mechanical and software engineering to ensure optical systems meet all necessary optical performance requirements;
  • Design optical systems, including LED and filter selection, light distribution and optimization, brightness enhancement films, filter stack definition, LCD selection and evaluation, optical test system design and implementation;
  • Provide the necessary information for product configuration control and support for manufacturing;
  • Prepare specifications for products, systems, processes and procedures;
  • Organize project meetings for conceptual and detailed design reviews;
  • Provide ongoing technical guidance and review the work of designers and other technologists;
  • Participate in the evaluation of new design tools;
  • Track product requirements, deadlines, and project costs.

_ Related Specialty Activities_

  • Prepare the unit's optical performance assessment, along with the associated verification plan and selection of appropriate photometric equipment;
  • Identify and analyze colour coordinates, NVIS compatibility, brightness uniformity, sunlight readability, specular reflection, parallax, ghosting, flare and optical aberrations;
  • Responsible for key optical component hardware, part and component specifications, procurement advice, characterization and qualification tests;
  • Responsible for the manufacturing of prototypes, process and manufacturing orientation, product characterization and test strategy;
  • Assist in the development and implementation of operating procedures and guidelines for photometric equipment used by production personnel;
  • Provide support to production personnel in resolving optical problems with units in production.

REQUIREMENTS

  • College degree in a relevant field;
  • Minimum of 9 years of relevant optical experience in research or engineering;
  • Good knowledge of optical test equipment (i.e. spectroradiometer, imaging photometers, conometer);
  • Familiarity with SAE and military standards (i.e. ARP4256A, ARP4260B, AS7788 and MIL STD3009);
  • Knowledge of Labview and Matlab and Ray Tracing software, an asset.
