Dalhousie University is a member of the U-15, Canada's group of top 15 research-intensive universities. Under the leadership of the Vice-President Research & Innovation, Dalhousie administers over $200M annually in research funding. Reporting to the Manager, Institutional and International Programs, the Research Administrator (RA) is responsible for supporting the administration of institutional and strategic funding opportunities, with a particular focus on opportunities supported by the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF). The RA maintains expert knowledge and understanding of research funding agency programs and policies and Dalhousie's research policies and procedures. The RA advises senior ORS staff on all post-award matters.

Key Responsibilities

  • Reviews successful grant applications, subawards, and transfers of funding, with particular emphasis on the budget, financial management component and any partnership funds with specific attention to initiatives funded through CFREF.
  • Confirms the need for certifications or ethics approval with researchers and responsible units and authorizes internal research account opening.
  • Maintains knowledge, advises researchers, and confers with the ORS Legal team on university and granting agency policies, procedures, and regulations to ensure compliance.
  • Reviews Transfer of Funds letters, confirms the availability of funds, and verifies the status of the researcher as co-investigator and the eligibility of the partnering institution.
  • Supports researchers in the transfer of funds, outgoing partnership agreements, sub-awards and sub-contracts between institutions and external collaborators, as detailed in the Notice of Award and/or grant application, and ensures the transfer occurs in accordance with the university's and funding agency's policies and procedures.
  • Supports researchers and administrators in meeting annual reporting. Represents Dalhousie in liaising with administrative units at other institutions.
Note

The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.

Required Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree, with approximately three to five years' related experience (or equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Demonstrated excellent client service experience working independently in a high-volume, deadline-driven environment.
  • Excellent attention to detail, and teamwork, communication and problem solving skills.
  • Knowledge of commonly used office software packages, database experience and expertise.
Assets
  • Experience in a university environment in an area related to research grants administration and external funding agencies.
