About us:


The Myhal Centre Fabrication Facility supports physical fabrication for undergraduate / graduate students and personal projects by Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering members.

The facility covers a widerange of techniques from traditional fabrication with soft materials (plastic/fabrics/foams/wood/sheet metal) to modern digital fabrication tools (3D printing/ Laser cutting/CNC routing), and electronics prototyping and proof of concept embedded systems (soldering, basic electronic circuits, Arduino and/or Raspberry pi).

The Myhal Centre for Engineering Innovation and Entrepreneurship (MCEIE) Facilitator uses the resources available in the Myhal Fabrication Facility (MYFab) composed of two principal design spaces (the Light Fabrication Facility (LFF) and the Rapid Prototyping Facility (RPF)), ensuring that they are organized, well maintained, and sufficiently stocked.

The incumbent demonstrates and practices instructional leadership in the use of tools, machines, and material selection along with assembly techniques, practical demonstrations, and safety.

The position requires excellence in customer service as the role is the front desk that delivers components and manufactured parts to end users.

There is a wide range of users that access the facility from researchers to students' personal projects, with a wide variety of needs and interests.

Teamwork is essential as the position relies in working collaboratively with the rest of the staff (5) with each having different strengths and weaknesses.

A big focus of the facility is drop-in support of first
- and second-year students outside of regular course hours, with over 2000 students enrolled in those years it represents a sizable portion of the space activities in the fall and winter semester. The Facilitator supports students, encouraging them to use the feedback from the student's own experimentation to inform multiple design iterations, fabrication, and testing.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Implementing plans and process improvements for lab/workshop activities
  • Preparing, assembling and settingup material, equipment and supplies according to the needs of the facility
  • Providing detailed explanations and demonstrating procedures to students and/or employees on experiment set ups and lab techniques
  • Analyzing and recommending suitable materials and methods of approaching fabrication and/or lab work
  • Preparing and processing components, materials, and parts orders for space users
  • Disseminating information regarding policies and guidelines to facilities users
  • Determining technical requirements for fabrication projects
  • Designing, modifying and fabricating custom lab apparatus, tools and jigs
  • Providing safety training and ensuring adherence to safety procedures and standards

Essential Qualifications:

  • Community College Diploma in Engineering/Technology or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of related experience in a mixed fabrication environment that includes traditional workshop and digital manufacturing technologies, such as computeraided design and manufacturing (CADCAM), utilizing a variety of materials (e.g. wood, fabric, metal, plastics & thermoplastics) and components (e.g. fasteners, microcontrollers e.g. arduinos, tubes, gears, etc.).
  • Experience using digital modelling software platforms.
  • Demonstrated skills with a variety of tools and equipment found in traditional workshops and digital manufacturing facilities.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with manual and powered/energized resources.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to provide technical advice to students and explain technical terms, tool and equipment operation, and drawings to them.
