The Afghan Women's Organization Refugee and Immigrant Services is a settlement agency providing a wide range of services to immigrants and a SAH (sponsorship agreement holder).

Our vision is of refugees and immigrants, especially those who have experienced wars and persecution and those who are marginalized, leading self-sufficient and dignified lives in a socially inclusive society.

AWO works with refugees and immigrants, with a special focus on women and their families.

Position:


The Peer Researcher[i]will perform data management and/or analysis, as appropriate; facilitate community group discussion; assist researchers with final report; support knowledge mobilization to different audiences, attend regular meetings and trainings, and perform any other tasks assigned by the Principal Investigator.

The Peer Researcher will work under the supervision of the Project Coordinator from AWO, and the Principal Investigator from the Centre for Refugee Studies at York University.


Project Overview:


Gender based violence (GBV) is a worldwide issue linked to a range of physical and mental health problems that can have long term impacts.

Data from Statistics Canada suggests that gender-based violence (GBV) significantly increased with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic This has brought increased attention to the issue of GBV in Canada, especially for immigrant (including refugee) communities.

Studies suggest that the pandemic may also have affected gender norms, as the pandemic brought more job losses and financial precarity.


The study explores survivor, service provider, and community member perspectives on effective gender-based violence (GBV) interventions, practices, services, and types of support for all forms of GBV for Afghan, Iraqi, Iranian and Syrian women and girls who live in the Greater Toronto Area.


General Duties:

  • Perform data management tasks including transcription, data entry, coding, and analysis
  • Assist researchers in drafting and submitting the final report
  • Take roles in organizing and facilitating group discussions with community members, service providers and community leaders.
  • Design and disseminate posters, videos, and presentations related to the project findings, digitally (online platforms) and in community events.
  • Attend regular meetings with the research team.
  • Communicate effectively with the team.
  • Perform any projectrelated tasks as assigned by the Principal Investigator or Project Coordinator.

Qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge of and connection to Afghan or Iranian communities
  • Able to communicate in Farsi, Pashto or Dari.
  • Fluency and ability to read and write in English and Pashto, Dari or Farsi.
  • Knowledge of social services offered for newcomer communities in the Greater Toronto Area, specifically Gender Based Violencerelated services
  • Basic knowledge of research methods and conducting research and/or working with vulnerable populations such as refugees.
  • Able to work with team members from different communities.

Education:

  • Minimum undergraduate or college degree in social sciences or humanities. Psychology, social work, and related fields are preferred
  • Priority will be given to those with research experience.
  • Previous experience in countries other than Canada will be recognized
