Background

ACSA is a nonprofit, multi-service agency addressing needs and empowering children, youth, newcomers, homeless, and otherwise underserved communities. Our core programs include housing and outreach programs, food security programs, newcomer services, youth outreach and therapy programs, child and family programs, early years' programs, computer access programs, and community engagement.


The Youth Supporting Youth (YSY) pilot is a peer support program that will support marginalized and vulnerable youth, including those at risk of or involved with gang violence.

This project is a part of York Region's Community Safety and Well-Being Plan, which is a long-term tool to enhance safety and well-being through proactive, targeted and community-driven actions.


Summary of Job Functions

Supporting the Project Coordinator, the Facilitator will assist the development, implementation and evaluation of the Youth Supporting Youth project pilot. The facilitator will work with youth living in the target areas of Northern Georgina, Central Newmarket, South-Central Markham; and South-Central Richmond Hill (including the City of Vaughan) between the ages of 12-26, with lived experience of community violence exposure and other intersecting vulnerabilities.

Duties include:

  • Work in supporting the Coordinator to develop an annualized work plan which incorporates community workshops, give back events, community engagement events
  • Support and mentor the 4 Peer Mentor leaders, in collaboration with Coordinator
  • Review and support the project curriculum to ensure it is reflective of York Region
  • Support the implementation of training curriculum with project team
  • Develop project outreach and communication materials
  • Implement communitybased outreach and engagement for project to build relationships with local community leaders and partner agencies
  • Support in developing, planning and implementing engagement initiatives and opportunities for communities and youth vulnerable to serious violence and crime around safety, mental health, and/or healing
  • Support occasional administrative duties for the project (I.e. invoice collections, honoraria distribution, petty cash, sign outs, etc.)
  • Work closely with the Project Coordinator to implement workshop/community logistics (space, permits, refreshments, transportation, etc.)
  • Maintain records of participant registration, outreach efforts and attendance and keep uptodate communication with participants
  • Connect with youth participants regarding emerging issues, conflict, risks and connect youth to wraparound supports needed
  • Follow safety protocols in responding to any/all incidents that may arise
  • Attend meetings, conferences, and training as required
  • Maintain evaluative information and work with the project evaluation team
  • Participate in supervision and staff meetings
  • Occasional weekend, and regular evening hours as required
  • Participating as a team member on the delivery of other activities in the agency
  • Perform the responsibilities of the position within the legislative and regulatory standards set out in the applicable Acts
  • Performs the responsibilities of the position consistent with the policies of ACSA
  • Protect own health and health of others by adopting safe work practices, reporting unsafe conditions immediately; and follows all guidelines for employees and employers as legislated under the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act

Qualifications:

  • Diploma or Degree in a related field (Child/Youth Work, Social Work, Community Development, etc.) or 3 years equivalent experience
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills
  • Ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with youth and young adults, families, community partners, staff, etc.
  • Experience providing holistic supports to youth vulnerable to serious violence and crime
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of programs and services available to youth and young adults in the Region of York
  • Demonstrated administration/organizational skills, including but not limited to program logistics, work plan development, reporting, case notes, petty case management, etc.
  • Excellent conflict resolution and crisis management skills
  • Ability to plan and facilitate youth friendly, activitybased workshops
  • Experience outreaching and engaging with community youth, residents, etc.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with trauma, loss, grief and counselling
  • Demonstrated experience working from an antiracist/antioppression framework
  • Demonstrated experience and sensitivity working with members of different cultural and racial
