The opportunity:

The University of Manitoba is looking for an Academic Advisor Indigenous Student.

This position will be responsible for advising and assisting current and prospective students with all aspects of University life focusing on Indigenous Students.

The Academic Advisor Indigenous Student will also be responsible for designing cultural learning opportunities and implement enhanced educational, social and cultural events/activities for Indigenous students.


The qualifications and experience we're looking for:
THIS POSITION IS DESIGNATED FOR INDIGENOUS CANDIDATES. APPLICANTS MUST SELF-DECLARE ON THEIR COVER LETTER/RESUME AS INDIGENOUS (FIRST NATION, METIS AND/OR INUIT)

  • Undergraduate Bachelor's degree required.
  • A BA from University of Manitoba is preferred.
  • Minimum two years of directly related administrative and advising experience working with Indigenous students in a postsecondary institution is required.
  • Experience working with Indigenous Community (First Nations, Metis and Inuit) is required.
  • An acceptable combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Experience with developmental advising and Indigenous learning styles is required.
  • An indepth understanding of Indigenous world views, cultures and knowledge especially as they relate to education is required.
  • A demonstrated knowledge of the Faculty of Arts degrees, programs and regulations is required.
  • A demonstrated engagement with and commitment to Indigenous student success is required.
  • Empathy and caring towards all students particularly Indigenous students is required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work effectively with students, staff, faculty, Elders, alumni, Indigenous communities, community and other organizations/stakeholders, and the public is required.
  • Demonstrated effective public speaking and presentation skills are required.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with internal and external clients is required.
  • Creativity and initiative in program design and problem solving is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to deal with high demand and/or stressful contacts is required.
  • Attention to detail is essential.
  • Indepth knowledge of Microsoft 365 is required.
  • Ability to work under pressure is required.
  • Ability to think analytically is required.
  • Ability to manage the flow of a large volume of administrative work is required.
  • Ability to efficiently use time, plan and organize diverse tasks is required.
  • Ability to speak an Indigenous language of Manitoba is preferred.
  • Knowledge of student aid and/or community funding assistance is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Aurora Student information system functions is preferred.
  • Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality is required.
