100% TERM Indigenous Grad Coach (Sept 5/2- Feb 6/24)
***The Winnipeg School Division requires Indigenous Graduation Coaches whose main goal is to support Indigenous students to increase High School Completion as part of the provincial requirements of the IAA Grant. The Indigenous Graduation Coach will build relationships with Indigenous students and staff, also mentor and support transitions between grades 8 to 9 and grades 9 to 12, incorporate culture, career planning, monitor academics and encourage parental engagement. The Graduation Coach position will be a part of the Division's Indigenous Education Team under the supervision of the Director of Indigenous Education.

Duties:

  • Build strong relationships and be a mentor to Indigenous high school students
  • Support transitions to high school and between high school to postsecondary;
  • Through culture, build a sense belonging by the action of unconditional generosity
  • Expose students to career opportunities and support career planning;
  • Support academic growth and success; build individual success plans
  • Engage parents to discuss planning, preparation, and be part of the next steps.
  • Collect, interpret, and engage in program data integral to student success
  • Engage in the divisional Indigenous Youth Leadership Program (IYLP) and Manitoba Indigenous Youth Achievement Awards (MIYAA)

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Education and/or Counseling plus experience working with Indigenous students and high school curriculum;
  • Must have an understanding of Indigenous cultures, the ability and passion to help students be successful, and the ability to build strong relationships with students, teachers, administrators, and parents;
  • Knowledge and ability to identify and support at risk students using data, anecdotal information, attendance and family circumstances ;
  • Ability to develop individual intervention strategies to support student success;
  • Ability to plan for student transition, graduation, postsecondary, and the workforce;
  • Ability to create a graduation team for each student that may include teachers, family, and other supports in and out of school;
  • Support the student and his/her team by mentoring and assessing student progress;
  • Experience identifying and addressing atrisk behaviours, knowledge of supports in and out of school community connections, and alternative education opportunities.
  • Must have an understanding of The Land, The People, and The Stories.
  • Ability to speak Cree or Ojibwe an asset
  • Manitoba Teaching Certificate
