The Public Service Commission (PSC) is the human resources organization supporting government departments and employees as they deliver programs and services to Nova Scotians.

We are committed to an engaged and inclusive public service. Our work culture is one of collaboration, flexibility, partnership, and continuous improvement.

We are currently searching for the right person to fill a vacancy in Absence Management. If you enjoy working closely with clients, a fast-paced work environment and a close-knit team, this is the opportunity for you

About Our Opportunity:

Reporting to the Director, Absence Management, the Absence Management Consultant is a problem solver, change agent, and service-oriented business partner who coaches, consults, and supports managers and employees within our complex unionized environment.

With a focus on helping employees return to work in a safe and timely manner after an absence, the Absence Management Consultant's work contributes to workplace productivity and employee wellness and satisfaction.

As part of developing new return to work and absence management related strategies, the Absence Management Consultant spends a significant amount of time consulting with external service providers, management (ranging from department heads to front line managers), employees, and PSC partners.

You have both an internal and external focus and must always be aware of the broader implications of all decisions.

With a keen sense of teamwork and a passion for excellent client service, you will work with the following Absence Management programs: Short Term Illness Support Program, Workers' Compensation, Long Term Disability, and Workplace Accommodations.

There will be opportunities to contribute to on-going initiatives as well as continuous improvement of the Absence Management programs and processes.

In this role, you must build strong relationships with clients, colleagues, and stakeholders through demonstrated expertise, ethical behaviour, and integrity.

You exercise excellent judgement and work collaboratively across the PSC and other government departments to problem solve and find creative solutions.

Personal accountability to deliver on client expectations and excellent judgement are what ensures success in this role, along with a commitment to understanding the client's business and needs.

About You:

To be successful in this role, you will have a post-secondary education in Human Resources, health sciences, health care, or social services, and four (4) years of progressive experience in decision-making roles.

An equivalent combination of education and related experience will be considered.

Related experience may include providing advice and assistance on a broad range of human resources programs and services (such as relevant employment and human rights legislation or terms and conditions of employment), case management, health service delivery, and working in a unionized environment.

While this is not a 'case manager' role, direct experience working with Absence Management programs or third-party case management service providers is preferred.

Experience in a unionized environment, interpreting collective agreements and/or legislation would be an asset.
