Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • Degree/Diploma or equivalent combination of knowledge, skills, abilities in a relevant discipline such as Education, Teaching and Learning or Training and Development. A Masters' Degree would be considered an asset.
  • A minimum of 5-years' recent experience in the leadership and administration of Teaching and Learning at the post-secondary level is preferred.
  • Experience managing physical and financial resources in order to ensure effective service delivery.
  • Proven ability to quickly establish effective and credible relationships, both internally and externally is essential.
  • Experience and solid understanding of the principles and practices of adult learning.
  • Successful experience in managing projects, including financial aspects of project management.
  • Demonstrated application of learning-centered concepts.
  • Experience in instructional design and implementation.
  • Proficiency with use of technology in the delivery of educational materials and concepts.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director of Academic Planning and Evaluation, the Head of Teaching and Learning Innovation is responsible for leading a culture of excellence and continuous improvement in all areas of teaching and learning.

The Head of Teaching and Learning Innovation leads a team and develops strategy for teaching and learning, instructional design, delivery, and technology integration. This role provides leadership and oversight of instructor professional development, leads the design and development of innovative college-wide teaching and learning strategies, develops processes and systems that enable the development of current and future faculty talent across the College, conducts needs analysis and research, reports on training needs and delivery, develops and maintains a network of relationships with external educational institutions, stays abreast of national and international best practice research.

The role requires strong interpersonal skills that may involve changing behaviour, inspiring and motivating others, and mentorship. It involves close collaboration with all areas of NBCC leadership to ensure that teaching strategies and deliveries map to the College's strategic direction and meet the needs of faculty, students, and employers.

In this role you will:

  • Strive to establish NBCC as a leader in faculty development for post-secondary education, locally and nationally.
  • Ensure the Teaching and Learning strategy aligns with and integrates into strategic, academic and departmental goals, plans and activities.
  • Guide, analyze, and evaluate NBCC's Teaching and Learning Spaces and their effectiveness, including providing recommendations to Facilities, Information Technology, and others on their design, renovation, maintenance, and support.
  • Ensure the provision of effective professional growth, instructional development, and training for instructors through stand-alone and stackable professional learning opportunities, offered face-to-face or using alternative methods.
  • Provide leadership and visioning in teaching and learning by establishing and maintaining a Teaching and Learning Hub that encourages creative and independent use of instructional methods and technologies.
  • Provide strategic direction for NBCC's learning management system (D2L Brightspace).
  • Lead innovation in the area of technology-enhanced pedagogy at NBCC, such as in the use of instructional technology effective strategies for delivering technical or competency-based training.
  • Evaluate emerging and existing technologies; developing, demonstrating and implementing best practice models to ensure the College remains a leader in the integration of technology to support and enhance teaching and learning.
  • Contribute to the development of policies, practices, and guidelines relate to teaching and learning innovation and design.
  • Foster a culture of teaching excellence by ensuring accomplishments in teaching and learning are acknowledged and celebrated.
  • Secure and manage external service providers, manage diverse client expectations, implement continuous improvement, and advise on training solutions.
  • Collaborate with and guide Deans, Academic Chairs, and faculty to ensure programs are delivered efficiently and effectively and that teaching methodologies support adult education best practices.
  • Participate in working groups and committees related to strategic initiatives to provide insight, recommendations and guidance.
