The Department of Natural Resources and Energy Development (DNRED) is seeking an individual to join the Geological Surveys Branch, as an Industry Relations Geologist, located in Sussex.

As a member of the Geological Surveys-South team and reporting to the Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing and coordinating activities related to the drill core management program in New Brunswick. The incumbent will be stationed at the DNRED office in Sussex and will be responsible for operations at the core storage facilities located at Picadilly, Madran, and Fredericton. Primary responsibilities include the following: overseeing the hiring and supervision of seasonal and casual employees; ensuring proper and efficient storage of core, and ensuring core facility operations are conducted in accordance with all required safety standards and regulations; receiving, cataloging, and disposing of drill core and maintaining an up-to-date digital inventory of stored drill core; planning and conducting core retrieval operations; overseeing construction and maintenance of drill core storage sheds, and other general maintenance projects, including acquisition of materials and services. The incumbent will be responsible for ensuring that visitors to the facilities are following relevant acts, regulations, and policies; participating in the development and implementation of a long-term strategy for drill core management and storage; and coordinating drill core access for industry clients, academic researchers, and department staff. This incumbent will also be responsible for providing support to the mineral exploration sector and for promoting mineral literacy. Responsibilities include: providing geological advice and support to prospectors regarding their mineral exploration projects and how to market those properties at industry forums and events; contributing to departmental geoscience initiatives, including bedrock mapping and mineral deposit investigations; updating databases; participating in outreach activities; and other unspecified related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelor of Science in Geology, and a minimum of five (5) years of related field experience, including experience with mineral exploration; or a Master of Science in Geology, and a minimum of three (3) years of related field experience, including experience with mineral exploration. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

Written and spoken competence in English is required. Please state your language capability on your application.

Registration or eligibility for registration as a Professional Geoscientist with the New Brunswick Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists, is required.

ASSET QUALIFICATION(S): Preference may be given to candidates that demonstrate one or more of the following: experience logging drill core; experience using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Subject to the response to this competition, candidates may be required to demonstrate on their application one or more of the asset qualifications in addition to the essential qualifications in order to be given further consideration.

  • Written communication.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Performing field work, including hiking in a variety of terrain and weather conditions; performing physically demanding tasks, including heavy lifting; travelling regularly throughout the province, often for multiple days and occasionally to remote locations; working outside of the regular scheduled work hours on occasion; possession of a valid Class 5 driver licence as issued by the Province of New Brunswick, or equivalent; maintaining membership in the New Brunswick Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists.

SALARY: $63,700 to $88,972 per annum
