PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

As the Assistant Director Intermodal & Automotive Operations, you will lead the Intermodal & Automotive terminals within a specified territory, including supervising the operating plans and performance trends. You will develop and maintain a level of service that meets or exceeds customer expectations. You will ensure activities are performed safely, effectively and efficiently at minimal cost.

 

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Implement the business strategy and operating plan for Intermodal & Automotive Facilities that fall within the Alberta Territory
  • Lead activities to ensure various performance targets are met for operating plan, service level is met and train departures are on time
  • Execution and support of the safety program in the Territory through the monitoring, auditing safety compliance and applying corrective action when required
  • Ensure all container loads, unloads and storage of containers are completed in alignment with rules and standards for the equipment and yard
  • Ensure security of the responsible territory to prevent theft and unauthorized handling of CPKC property and shipments and supervise the flow of truck traffic and compliance with site rules with drivers.
  • Ensure Mechanical, switching crews, truck drivers, intermodal staff and/or contractors are working cooperatively and effectively to provide on-time, quality train releases and truck pick-ups.
  • Implement process improvement recommendation and continuously improve efficiency and effectiveness of the terminal
  • Ensure Supervisors conduct all activities consistent with the collective agreement and/or the contractor agreement and provide them with leadership, guidance to help them improve their effectiveness and support their career goals and development
  • Ensure compliance with Health, Safety, Security and Environmental policy and standards.
  • Ensure all safety rules failures are investigated complete with recommendations of reprimand and/or corrective action plans
  • Responsible for resolving and manage union grievances, arbitration rulings, Canadian Human Rights, EEOC human rights and discrimination claims originating within the jurisdiction
  • Accountable for meeting the terminal expense budgets within the assigned territory
  • Oversight of terminal capacity analysis, including facilitating capital planning requirements for respective terminal; direct tactical support and day to day operations of the facility
  • Drive performance management and career development initiatives for Managers and Supervisors to foster a culture of continuous improvement and professional growth.
  • Develop and administer Supervisor schedules, including arranging vacation and training, to maintain high operational standards and staff competency.
  • Issue train build instructions and the IMS Train Plan to enable efficient assembly and prompt departure of trains.
  • Issue dwell reports with actionable plans for the movement of railcars to optimize yard space and reduce dwell.
  • Provide detailed fluidity reports to strategically run yard capacity, settle transfer sizes, and offer concise turnover instructions for smooth shift transitions.
  • Lead port planning activities, providing instructions to IMS ports in line with domestic loading plans.
  • Ensure accurate planning and tagging of tracks in Oasis for loading.
  • Communicate strategically with T&E and OC regarding train operations to maintain alignment on objectives.
  • Respond to incidents with urgency, ensure proper escalation in line with the emergency action plan, and follow-up to mitigate risks and ensure safety.
  • Maintain the daily terminal scorecards, updating performance metrics and operational statistics.
  • Process and approve invoices related to contractors, physical protection systems, and fleet management, ensuring fiscal responsibility.
  • Manage inventory and the procurement of terminal supplies, ensuring all necessary materials are readily available for uninterrupted terminal operations.
  • Address no-bill rail car issues by liaising with the billing department to resolve billing discrepancies.
  • Oversee fleet vehicle assignments in MATS, ensuring the right equipment is available for operational needs.
  • Conduct thorough AED inspections, certify operational readiness, and manage the replacement of units to uphold health and safety standards.
  • Provide support and consultation to Director and Supervisors with regards to their responsibilities and accountabilities.

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school degree or equivalent is required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Transportation or equivalent is preferred;
  • Broad understanding of rail operations;
  • Understanding of intermodal and automotive terminal operations;
  • Computer skills (Word, Excel, Outlook);
  • Proven capabilities in driving and implementing cultural change;
  • Ability to provide pinpointed feedback and apply balanced consequences;
  • Strong conflict resolution skills;
  • Capable of evaluating risks;
  • Experience with SAP, Oasis, TMS, Nexus and Tyes would be an asset;
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing or orally;
  • Ability to influence leaders;
  • Ability to drill down, understand root cause and resolve complex issues;
  • Experience in unionized environment would be considered an asset.

Management Conductor Program:
