The AESO (Alberta Electric System Operator) is seeking qualified candidates for an Energy Market Analyst fixed term position within the Operations Engineering & Market Support (OEMS) group. OEMS is a cross-functional group with a broad range of responsibilities including ancillary services, energy market systems, system performance, and systems engineering. We help customers connect their assets to the grid and register for participation in the energy and ancillary services markets. Join our dynamic team and contribute to the efficient and reliable operation of Alberta's electrical grid and electricity markets.

You will work with customers to enable the participation of new and existing facilities in the energy and AS markets. You will provide training and technical support for customers, support the sustainment of our market access systems, and work collaboratively to identify and test potential improvements. Working outside business hours will occasionally be required.

You will coordinate a shared portfolio of customer requests with several colleagues, with the objective of ensuring customer concerns are addressed promptly and completely. In doing so, you will become integrated with a broad support network within the AESO while maintaining friendly and productive relationships with industry.

This is a 12-month fixed term role. The target hire date is July 2024.

In a fixed term role, you will be eligible for paid vacation time, 4 fixed day offs per year, and health & dental benefits, as part of your overall compensation package. We support a hybrid work environment, where the team is in the downtown Calgary office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Mondays and Fridays are flexible for where you work best.

Accountabilities include but are not limited to:

  • Administer market access systems, maintain records, and review and implement requests to enroll as a market participant and add or change assets.

  • Provide training and technical support for customers who participate in the energy and AS markets, referring them to engineers or IT specialists when required.

  • Coordinate aspects of asset interconnection and energization between the customer and various groups within the AESO.

  • Manage contracts, agreements, qualifications, and payments for system access.

  • Be the first point of contact between the AESO and electricity market participants.

  • Identify deficiencies or opportunities to improve market access systems, suggest potential solutions, and perform user acceptance testing.

  • Develop and publish processes, application procedures, forms and requirements related to grid and market access.

  • Act as a backup trader for ancillary services.

  • Ensure public information is current and automated reports are functioning correctly.

  • Comply with AESO policies including health and safety, internal compliance, provision of information related to authoritative documents, records management, and others.

What you'll bring to us:

  • A bachelor's degree in commerce, Business Administration, Economics, Communications, or a related field is an asset but not required.

  • A project management certificate such as a PMP certificate is an asset but not required.

The following experiences are valuable, but not strictly required:

  • 3+ years of customer service, especially in the electricity industry, and especially business-to-business or on behalf of an ISO, government, or regulatory agency.

  • Working within the Alberta electricity market and/or the AESO interconnection process

  • Developing and maintaining a network of positive business relationships.

  • Implementing, enhancing, or designing complex business processes.

  • Training or instructing customers or colleagues.

  • Coordinating and monitoring inter-disciplinary processes involving many individual contributors.

  • Problem solving in a collaborative business context.
