We need an enthusiastic and high performing professional who can contribute to the continued success of our Training Division. The responsibility in this position is significant, and it provides the opportunity to make a profound difference in the professional development of current and future firefighters.

Reporting to the Division Chief of Training, the Training Officer has responsibility for training issues related to fire fighting and the Markham Fire and Emergency Services. The responsibilities will include and are not limited to the direct teaching and monitoring of firefighting skills to new and existing staff as well as the facilitating of all resources necessary to provide effective and efficient training programs for all officers and firefighters including Quality Assurance.

Your duties, as directed by the Division Chief of Training, will include:

  • Develop appropriate training programs for self-delivery and delivery by others
  • Develop and maintain training records
  • Develop and prepare learning materials including; lesson plans, training safety plans, training aids and manuals.
  • Plan and evaluate in-service training programs
  • Participate in recruit training programs
  • Conduct research to support program development
  • Conduct performance evaluations as required to determine the effectiveness of the various training programs
  • Required to participate on committees as directed
  • Independently develop, from start to finish, training programs, plans and materials for practical and lecture style training sessions.
  • Maintains professional competency through a commitment to lifelong learning, attendance at conferences and seminars as well as establishing a network of training contacts
  • Shall assume and facilitate a training portfolio that addresses departmental needs and priorities
  • Monitors and evaluates personnel during training evolutions and provides assessment to the Division Chief of Training on performance that helps establish and maintains a professional and effective fire service team within established health and safety standards
  • Researches and updates any issue(s) as they relate to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Occupational Health and Safety Act, or any other standards that may apply related to operational methods and practices.

Your professional profile as a Fire Training Officer will ideally include:

  • 5 years’ experience as a suppression firefighter
  • A post secondary degree or diploma in Adult Education, Public Safety Administration, Fire & Life Safety Studies, Healthcare/Paramedical Studies or a closely related field would be considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated fire service experience including instruction experience in the following (or combination thereof) Medical/First Aid, Fire Ground Operations, Hazmat, Water Rescue, and /or Technical Rescue will be considered an asset.
  • Training Officer accreditation by OFM or NFPA 1041 - 1 with ability to achieve level II within 2 years or equivalent combination of training, education and experience.
  • Possess as a minimum a current Standard First Aid with CPR BLS/HCP or Emergency Medical Responder (EMR)
  • Excellent presentation, interpersonal, organizational, written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision
  • Ability to develop training programs suitable to various delivery methods, word-processing experience
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and its implications to the effective delivery of training programs
  • Track record as an organized professional with excellent interpersonal, communication, presentation, research and report-writing skills.
  • A valid Ontario Class G driver’s licence.
  • Possess or be willing to obtain within one (1) year a valid Class “D” Ontario Driver’s License with “Z” Air Brake endorsement.
  • As a condition of employment, a satisfactory driver’s abstract and vulnerable sector screening check must be submitted.

This full-time position (40 hour work week) is covered by the Markham Professional Firefighters’ Association and is subject to a 12-month probationary period. We offer a salary commensurate with experience and per the current collective agreement.
